Personally, I think physically attacking other vessels is wrong, even if the cause is perceived as noble. This is the same justification used for waging wars regardless of whether the side is the defender or aggressor.

Well, that's a very legitimate position to come from. Not one I personally agree with mind you, but I respect your position.

In most circumstances I'm very apposed to vigilantism, because there is usually a police force or armed forces that will police the problem. But when it comes to organised poaching in international waters, or even around impoverished nations that can't afford a navy or police capable of acting, or where as in the case of killing whales in the southern whale sanctuary, then there simply is no one to police the law. Into that vacancy comes the purpose and justification of SS. That's just my view of course.

I would be curious to know how they have modified this boat for their purpose. Besides being wave piercing the "axe" bow certainly looks intimidating. I notice in the photo I posted earlier of the supper structure being craned into place that the stem itself is fairly large diameter round tube that has the hull plating welded to it.

I wonder if they fill the tube with concrete or maybe fill a section of the bow. For those who questioned whether the boat looked like it was hogging here is a profile pic from Damen. The deeper forefoot is said to prevent pounding by stopping the bow from completely exiting the water if the boat hobby horses.

It's a ketch, so the rig won't be as big as in a sloop.

Most work boats of that size aren't very thick. Thick enough but when each plate is welded to the frames or strakes it can pull the plate in or out causing what you see I the picture. It's often common down here in the GOM. even larger supply vessels have some of that somewhere. They are work boats, not pretty pleasure yachts.

Also, with the type and amount of props this vessel has(not sure of the length, haven't seen anything regarding it here) but this boat is most likely a fast vessel similar to a large crew boat.

As I said before, I doubt this is built for ice. Though it could be classed for ice due to the broad range SS goes globally. Regarding the bow, I also strongly doubt it is filled with concrete or any besides air. Added deadweight on any vessel is backwards thinking. It cause more hull drag and the bow to sit lower in the water which causes extra fuel burn and slower speeds. Not to mention it takes away from the amount of actual cargo it can hold. It is most likely reinforced dead space because it is, up to the where the house begins, all collision zone and a forepeak storage space with chain locker.

From article, it is a 175' fast vessel making speeds of 30 kts. That's is your typical oil industry crew boat size and speed here in the Gulf of Mexico.

I work down here on a 300' OSV, so I see them daily. Though, no axe bow fast vessels yet to make it down here, just the traditional bows.
