Re: New "Big" boat owner

My boat, 42 foot inboard diesel sailboat, has a PSS dripless seal that was put in at the last haulout. I am not that shot in the butt with it, and am considering going back to a stuffing box with the new graphite packing.

Mine didn't exactly fail, but it slipped, letting a torrent of salt water spray all over my engine, one day. It was easy to adjust to where it was supposed to be, but I never had a stuffing box spray my engine room with salt water.

Re: New "Big" boat owner

Group9: It was not installed correctly. Should have had a clamp (eg shaft zinc) on the inboard side of PSS to ensure no slippage.

I haul in 2 years and am switching my DSS back to traditional stuffing box. My PO installed mine as part of a refit in 2011 and I've been less than impressed with it. Call me old fashioned but adjusting packing once in a while really is not the most difficult job on a boat.
