Re: Mercruiser

Hi Raamcv,

Are you thinking of the Ford Windsor 302 block (~180 to 250 hp)? That thing dates to the '60s and, as far as I know, was discontinued around 2001 or so. Some of the hot-rod folks still use it, but I think parts might be getting hard to find.

If you're repowering, I'd look for something that's currently popular and supported. Mercruiser's 4.3 V6 (about 190-220 hp) and 5.0 V8 (about 260 hp) will be in production for the foreseeable future, are popular and relatively inexpensive, and can be found used all over the place. Volvo Penta builds pricier engines with higher-quality parts using these same blocks at the same power points.

The 220hp would be great it's finding one that is in good condition for under 1000 has proven to very difficult. Just trying to find something decent and not break the bank. I would be happy with a rebuilt motor as well.

Re: Mercruiser

Raamcv:

Unlike marine diesels, there just isn't much of a market for good running take outs of gasoline marine engines. Look for a Mercruiser, Crusader or Volvo Penta small block V8. All are based on the GM small block V8 and should fit in place of your 302.

If you can't find used, a new Crusader/Mercruiser/Volvo is going to cost $10-12,000. You can find no name marinizations of the same block for a few thousand less.
