Island Gypsy 51

My wife and I are looking at an IG 51 as a live aboard in the Northwest. Does anyone have experiance with this boat that could fill me in on how they handle etc. It's equipped with twin Volvo 235's turbo'd and is a 1983.

Thanks in advance

Re: Island Gypsy 51

Hi and welcome to the Cruisers Forum.

As to how an Island Gypsy 51 might handle there are only a few owners of large motor yachts on the forum. There are specialized Trawler forums that may be of more help.

If don't have much experience then it may be wise to do a course on this type of boat before buying one. This would also help with getting insurance (Don't leave home without it).

As a general observation no boat is easy to manage in a strong cross current and the high freeboard of the 51 would make managing the boat in high winds problematic.

I know someone with a 44' version and he is very happy with it, and he uses it as a liveaboard. It has a lot of room for its size, and appears to be a well equipped and good looking boat. Not sure how it handles as he never takes it anywhere!
