Re: Is this boat worth bying

Yes Terra Nova
That is exactly the question I need to SERRIOUSLY ask myself.
This tread has definitely made me question where I should put my priorities. As much as I would LOVE to have that boat, regardless of all the negative opinions from this tread, it might be too big of a project at this time.
I would believe that most of the negative response probably comes from sailors who can afford or already have their nice large cruisers or sailboats. Other than the boat I built, which I only manage to use for about 10 years, until the motor gave out and then the boat got damaged while stored in the yard, I could never afford another boat.

If the aluminum hull has no major issues, the rest of the boat you could deal with a little at a time, major concerns addressed first. If you have already saved up the $4500 you estimate it would take to make this a running boat, then that will be only a start. As there are many things to buy that you cannot even yet imagine, especially if you plan to restore this.

The bad motor is the worst of it. And it cannot be worth putting $3k in a 30 year old motor. Unless you have the know-how, time and money to rebuild this, yourself, you'd be buried in repair labor.

A better alternative is to find a boat that is at least ready to go, seaworthy and sound. One that won't add yet another huge unfinished project to your list.

Sometimes the heart needs to rule the head, and once the head has the facts to be found, it needs to join in with grace.

Boy, this sure is a topic that people like to respond to ... it must the feeling of making the dream a reality: hence the saying " the two best days of a sailor are the day he/she buys a boat and the day he or she sells it" ha,ha.

I took a second look and given that this is the boat you have wanted since you were a 'teen ... then I think you should get it.

Hopefully the boat can keep a smile on your face and a passion in your heart during the refit.

Go for it ....

Re: Is this boat worth bying

I would offer to tow vehicle from house free, if no dice, then offer a VERY low price 150.00 or so. Always, I say again , always start very low on price for the back yard boats. the boat is just rotting away anyway, owner probably just keeps it for sentimental value, or the old "I'll get a round to fixing it someday" idea. here in Florida USA, there are thousands of boats like this on lots, canals back yard. Offer to remove it free the most they can say is NO! you can go on internet ie. Craigs list e-bay and find as good if not better free or next to nothing. just my thoughts.

So I thought I would test your claim...I went on my local kijiji and searched for free boats...and you were absolutely RIGHT:

14 foot fibre glass boat FREE | powerboats, motorboats | Kingston | Kijiji

It certainly has possibility, if it fit your needs. A little plywood and a couple old 5 gallon gas cans inside the seat box for additional flotation cells and your in business!
Good luck and wear a life vest on that "maiden voyage Captain!
