Hurricane = permanent marker on vinyl seats = Help

So thankfully my boat survived hurricane matthew with just some cosmetic damage to the canvas which I had wanted to replace for some time

By a stroke of bad luck I had left some papers on the table which got blown around and they landed wet and ink side down on white vinyl seats and transferred the black permanent marker and ink writing onto the vinyl seats. I have tried every cleaner and chemical I own to remove those marks but damn they aren't coming off.

Any help would be appreciated ... especially if anyone has the secret to saving my seat?

Aquadome:

I'm not sure it was permanent marker that transferred---but even if it was, you may find that UV will take it out. I'd imagine the ink has got itself into the pores of the fabric, so maybe steam cleaning it will lift it, it's worth a try.

Another thing to try is un-dilute household bleach, apply with a toothbrush, let sit about 5 min, then brush gently, and rinse off thoroughly, and rinse the toothbrush, too.

If none of the above work, your only option is to get the sun on it for a while, it's not great for the vinyl, but sometimes the UV will remove stains.

You might have a boat "trimmer" (an upholsterer) replace just the damaged panel.

Good luck with it.

It was both ink and permanent marker that transferred onto the white vinyl seats mounted into boat so can't take out into the sun. I've tried all stengths of undiluted bleach, gasoline, ammonia, nail polish remover, stain removers, oops ... does not work

You might try hand cleaner, it works well with some printers ink.

I had a new exhaust hose lay against a white vinyl seat and leave a stain that refused removal. I finally went out and got some spray paint (as in paint formulated specially for spraying vinyl surfaces).... it worked and lasted for years

If the stain is on the surface of the vinyl Spray Nine(similar to 409 but not as concentrated) is safe to use and usually does the trick. You can find Spray Nine at Lowes or Home Depot. A stronger chemical cleaner that is safe to use on all vinyl surfaces is Nahptha, also found at hardware stores or Home Depot ect. Nahptha is also very good at getting adhesive residue off surfaces. We use both of these in the canvas upholstery shop all the time. If the ink has penetrated the vinyl, not much you can do about that. Sorry..

Re: Hurricane = permanent marker on vinyl seats = Help

Speaking of naptha....
I use a bar of fels-naptha on my dress shirts to get rid of "ring around the collar" and ink stains from the shirt pocket, it's available at any grocery store in the laundry detergent isle. Just follow the directions on the package! Basically it says to wet the bar and rub it in.

But it is not as fun as putting alcohol on it from the inside, I told my doctor once that I put alcohol on my muscle spasms, and he asked me if it really works....I told him yes if I put it on the inside....he asked "inside?" I did a drinking motion with my hand.... He replied"don't do that" and he promptly wrote me a script for muscles relaxers and pain pills!

Hairspray and paper towels have worked for me. Spray, wait a minute or two, then vigorously scrub with the paper towels. It might take 10 or more applications. Test on the bottom of a cushion to make sure it doesn't damage the material.

The pills don't work nearly as well as my friend Jim.

Jim Beam that is, and side effects are minimal if dosed properly.

Have you tried lacquer thinner or mek? I'd test somewhere first.
