- This armchair sailor may well get on the water yet! I've been offered this boat for $600 AUD. The majority of the repairs are needed in the transom, timber surrounding the bung above the hog, stern boxes either side of the outboard, ply bracing on the last frame & decking. It's been in a carport for 5 years but for the last 12 months the stern was out in the weather. I've spent the past couple of days inspecting everything after lifting the cockpit floor, draining the water from the hull (4" deep) & checking over the engine. All the hardwood frames & stringers are ok from what I can see so far, the exception being the 5" deep section of timber housing the bung. I basically need to rebuild the plywood structure around the outboard well & the decking aft of the cabin window frames. Motor appears ok, I've tested the compression, gearbox & all looks good. It will be tested this coming week by a marine tech. It hasn't run for 5 years but I'm wise enough to pay for an inspection & get them to fire it up. The current owner say's it was serviced just prior to it being stored but if it's shot then she'll reimburse the cost so I can take the boat to her son's place (she wants it gone either way). Nice deal I thought. The trailer is questionable but I plan to (if purchased after motor insp') drop the boat onto some tyres to get it down to a working height leaving the trailer free for many hours of labour, sweat & possibly a little bit of cursing. Hopefully I won't be....

So after a few days to examine the boat here's the diagnosis: I'm getting it "FOR FREE". The plan is to source a decent 2nd hand trailer (current one is rusted beyond repair), then get the water pump in the outboard fixed, then start work on the boat. I should be on the water , I estimate, by next march. I'm in no hurry which is the best part of this project.

HARTLEY FLARELINE 16. Restoration Project. Pt.1 - YouTube - HARTLEY FLARELINE 16. Restoration Project.Pt 2 - YouTube -Heres the first couple of videos on the Hartley. Been held up with bad weather as I have to store the boat under a big tarp outside. I now have the rear deck removed & some of the rotten bracing on the cockpit frames. The boat is actually constructed with Huon pine frames, stem & hog. A nice find I thought! I have bought enough ply to put it back together once I've made repairs to the transom. I have some DOT/glycol premix on order to coat everything as it goes back together.

HARTLEY FLARELINE 16. Restoration Project.Pt 3 - YouTube HARTLEY FLARELINE 16. Restoration project. Pt 4 - YouTube .Yes I have obviously started work on the boat whilst waiting to find a new trailer. Might as well. I managed to get the use of my parents enclosed carport so I can work regardless of bad weather. All the DOT I painted on the timbers has dried out, plus a good clean up with paint thinners & about to start putting things back together.---------------------------------------------------Click image for larger version
