Fuel Usage

Looking at buying a Cruisers 39' aft cabin w/twin gas 7.4 engines. Anyone know consumption "just putting along" and at cruising speed??

Re: FUEL USAGE

The only info I can provide is based on my 27 ft sport fisher.

I could expect about 1 mile per gallon combined when running at 75% power.
For yours I would guess about twice that consumption as a minimum at cruise speed.

Those engines typically burn 30 to 40 gallons per hour total at cruising speed (70% of wide open throttle). Putting along at idle speed or slightly over, 5 to 10 gallons per hour.

Re: Fuel Usage

You'd be better served by a boat that size with diesels for many reasons.

Re: Fuel Usage

While other may not agree I feel that most any inboard boat over 25 feet that is used for cruising or offshore fishing should be diesel. Some specialty boats like restored mahogany speedsters or larger restored boats that are just puttered around occasionally are fine with gas power.

Diesel is safer, less expensive in most places, and fuel consumption per hour or mile is better. Also, engine maintenance is greatly reduced but can be more expensive to initially buy or rebuild when that time comes.

My 38 ft cruises at 18 to 20 mph and burns 17-19 Gal/Hr while burns less than 3 to 4 Gal/Hr at troll. Twin 250 hp 8.2L Detroits.

Re: Fuel Usage

Ok this is from memory and I've not sailed my 'new to me' boat home yet. It's a 32 ton Dutch steel cruiser with a single Volvo D4 225. Now I'm pretty sure I recall a max usage of 30 litres per hour at 10 knots and a very reasonable 5 litres per hour at 6 knots. My passage planning is based upon stealth not speed.
