Fort Lauderdale Boatyard Recommendation

Hey guys,

There are a few things that I need to get done before heading to the Bahamas. I am changing the exhaust system with a company in Fort Lauderdale. Can anyone recommend a boatyard that I can doc in for a couple of weeks that allows DIY in Lauderdale?

The Playboy Marine Center is good, w/ reasonable daily rates, but their yard hours are very limited.

Another option is Lauderdale Marine Center. I think they permit 24/7 work, at a higher daily rate.

The Angler's Avenue Marine Center is another option, but they also have limited yard hours and are between low fixed bridges.

We had work done at the Lauderdale Marine Center when we purchased our trawler in Ft. Lauderdale. It is a very large, well run facility with many independent contractor operations on site. If you need it there is somebody there who can take care of it, including parts (eg exhaust) fabrication. Not sure whether they allow outside contractors in general, though we did not have any problem bringing in Naiad to service our stabilizers. They charged for hauling and a daily "lay" rate for time spent in the yard. Other billings were direct from the contractors used.
They have excellent security. You will not be allowed to stay on your boat while on the hard, so a hotel and car will be needed. I would certainly use them again if needed.

We also had a wonderful experience at Lauderdale Marine Center. Everything on our list was done fast and well. It's the kind of yard experience I hope for when I go somewhere new.

Curious, what are you changing the exhaust system to?

Are the engine natural or tubo?

If any of the engines/gen set exhaust manifold are wet, best to check them also. Wet mean raw water runs though the manifold. Our main 671 is dry, no raw water runs though the manifold, but the gen sets Perkins engine is wet, meaning raw water runs thru the manifold. Every 6 years I have the Perkins manifold check/tested. Wet manifold is a major reason that kills engines as the manifold rust through and water fills the cylindeers. What comes out the exhaust pipe is not as important as what runs though the enigine manifold.

Playboy is popular and have had a long waiting list in the past to secure a haul-out. 2 to 3 weeks.
Lauderdale Marine Center is good but sometimes tricky as you have back in to the slip for the travel lift and if the current is running in the river, you better be good, have a bow thruster or 6 deckhands
Use the tide table and go in at slack high or slack low.
(I learned that the hard way as I made 5 or 6 attempts to back in with a Morgan 41 with the current flowing and crowds growing larger at every attempt )

I would recommend Riverbend, easy in an out in a small lagoon, no current.
Been there dozens of times but they changed management recently, not sure what the details are as far as do-it-yourself nowadays.

Some yards I would stay away from, crooks trying to fleece ya..V...

Ours spent some time in River Bend. $TAY AWAY.

If you can get farther north the prices are lower.

Do not know about the current at FLMC because was not on board when boat was hauled, but must not be so difficult because they routinely work on boats much bigger than GG's phantom vessel!!!

Yes course there is big boats at LMC and most of them time their arrival and haul-out to slack tide, as suggested previously.
Others use 2 small tugs to assist with slip arrival and departure.
Having transitioned the New River hundreds of times I know about the current and it can be ripping.
(A natural flow from the Everglades augmented by tidal current)
