Yikes. A 61' Hatteras? That's a big boat. I used to have a 50' Hatteras. Came with a washer and dryer, and was more like an apartment. Do post pictures when she's yours. And all the best on the sea trial and survey!

Been using him for 40 years. Best surveyor I've ever worked with. Haven't spoken with him for a couple of years but assume he's still in the business. Does power and sail. In addition to being a great surveyor he knows his boats.

I recommend Jim because we used him...but here are a couple of other names for you if Jim is tied up or whatever......Bill was lined up to do the survey for us, couldn't make it, and recommended Jim and Gary. His e-mail is copied below.

Jim is the guy we used, I would like to assume that because Bill recommended Jim and Gary, that they are all in the same league....but, at the end of the day, some names for you.

Good luck with the survey, and if you're talking to Jim....tell him Randy and Beth said "hey".

As far as a mechanical review, I would consider looking at Gulf Coast Hatteras-New, Pre-owned and Brokerage Yacht Sales and Service Center

Who better to opine on the boat than an authorized dealer? If nothing else they are a source for repair estimates.

I actually have done that on the few times I have posted.
I have mostly lurked for a year or so.
There are some members who know I am GG's Mom though.
I can't identify myself everytime I post,
other than signing my siggy "GG's mom", haha, not much else I can do.
Not that anyone really gives a damn, and anyone who is really curious as to who the hell this lady is posting replies on GG thread, can click on Our Blog in my siggy ;-)
Other than that, don't think it's that important.

The engines in the Hattreas 61 are two 12V71 Detroit Diesels. Together these engines use 66 gallons per hour with a speed of 18 knots so with a fuel tank that holds 1170 gallons you can go 320 miles. The engines last 2500 hours because larger fuel injectors are used. This is a hull that is designed to plane, not a displacement hull that would have a range of 3000 miles with 3000 gallon tanks. Also, when the seas are 6 feet and higher, the yacht is difficult to control. Here is where I got the above information: Boat Review by David Pascoe: Hatteras 61 Motor Yacht - Hatteras Yachts

Now since these Hatteras engines have larger fuel injectors for more power, the cylinder walls wear out four to six times faster. This means you will need a very good Detroit Diesel mechanic to assess these 12V71 engines. You can try asking here for a mechanic near where the boat is: Detroit Diesel 71 - 92 series fans

You can also try diesel mechanics that work on fishing boats as the 12V71 are a size found in those commercial boats.

westwinds, that means a voyage from Miami to Boston would use roughly 5500 gals of fuel at a cost of around $25k.
Just a little out of my league.

I'm going to run at 10k not 18. That should be MUCH more economical, but a MY is still a MY. Can't put lipstick on a pig

GG -- Congratulations on finding your boat.

I can't help with the FL surveyor, but will recommend you check out Narragansett Bay to keep your new baby. It's an easy drive from Boston and gets you lower priced marine trades, no sales tax and warm water for the kids to swim in. (We commute from metro Boston and paid MA sales tax because we weren't sure how much time we'd be keeping the boat in MA, but the hit was a lot smaller for us than it will be for you.)

66 gph at 16 kts and 88 gph at 18kts Holy Comolie! Galaxy are you sure you wouldn't like a nice motor sailor instead? There are many fine examples with the comparable accommodations. Not knowing your long term plans or financial status I am sure you have thought this out but wow. If you go cruising stoping every few days to drop $6000.00 would drive me crazy...no scratch that...insane!

really not trying to rain on your parade, but add the cost of a professional skipper and a good mechanic on the crew, plan on two weeks because of a breakdown might happen.
You said west coast of Fl? Can a 61' Hat make it through Okochobee? Save a day or so and a lot of fuel.
Do people really run those things on plane when going long distances?
