Question Dehumidifier and ice maker

Hi,
I am in southwest FL. and am thinking of buying a portable dehumidifier as well as a portable ice maker. Does anyone have any experience with these items and if so what brand and model of each do y'all recommend?

We have had many portable dehumidifiers over the years. The latest technology we are having great success with is no longer dependent upon running the noisy and power hungry compressors.

No, it isn't 12VDC thermoelectric technology either... [We have one of those too; small but ineffective, and freezes-up too easily...]

Here is the compact, efficient, and very quiet unit we have and love:

EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE Desiccant Dehumidifier, 15-Pint, White, 120V

You can hardly hear it running compared to the compressor types.

Here is our blog post with more details if you are interested.

I can't help you with the ice maker as we have plenty of ice that is thousands of years old available to us as needed...

Cheers!

Bill

I see ice makers everywhere on boat now.
Run it when you are charging batteries with your generator.
There are quite a few different brands.

Re: Dehumidifier and ice maker

I use the same dehumidifier and have found it fantastic. Quiet, low power consumption, and excellent in a wide range of temperatures. Highly recommend this unit.

If you have a Home Depot close by check out the Magic Chef ice maker. 120v but makes ice quickly and meets my needs. I got a great deal on sale but normally about $100.

Re: Dehumidifier and ice maker

I have been using the EVA Dry EDV-4000 for about 2 years and it has performed great. This is a desiccant based dehumidifier and looks like the same model as recommended above, but rebranded, by Eva-dry. It has a optional hose to drain in the galley sink.

I use on of these: Amazon.com: Ivation GDM36 Powerful Mid-Size Thermo-Electric Dehumidifier - Quietly Gathers Up to 20oz. of Water per Day - For Spaces Up to 2,200 Cubic Feet: Home & Kitchen

I drilled two holes in the front and it drains into the sink

I've also had good luck with the Eva Dry, recommended by Practical Sailor.
Drilled a small hole and put it in the sink when we leave the boat.

I've just been looking into dehumidifiers and have tried the refrigeration type with a compressor and a Peltier Effect unit. The Peltier does what is advertised but is really pretty much useless. The refrigeration type is good and does the job but it is bulky. From my research I believe the Desiccant type is far superior to either of these though haven't tried one.

Same here, but I installed a 1/4 inch diameter vinyl hose from the unit to the sink so I can stick it down the drain a bit.
It made a big difference in the interior when the boat is unused and unheated in the PNW.

What size boat do you use this on? Do you run this year round or only during the winter?

I too live in the PNW (Gig Harbor area) and am just completing the purchase of a 40' Cooper Prowler. I plan to keep it in a slip this winter hooked to shore power with an oil filled radiator heater going. The previous owner has done this for years with good results. I am planning a solar panel installation next year to allow me to keep it on my own buoy and save monthly slip fees. Hopefully, the solar I install will be sufficient to run a dehumidifier like you are using and keep the batteries charged.

Re: Dehumidifier and ice maker

I use this Crazysales ice maker bought online. So happy with the storage bin which prevents my ice cubes from melting too fast. You can take one anywhere that you have a 110 to 120V outlet. However, if you want to take them on a boat or similar, you can purchase an inexpensive power inverter.
