Re: Defever leaning to port...trim tab issue?

I PMed CaCruiser the other day and he had an electrician and a diver coming to check for trim tabs and/or stabilizers and said when he found out what is the problem he would get back to us on CF...

Has anybody considered misaligned rudders?

Re: Defever leaning to port...trim tab issue?

I can certainly see how mis-aligned rudders would cause a lot of drag, but how would that induce roll? If they were mis-aligned, they would still be of equal mis-alignment if the boat were to maintain a true course?

Re: Defever leaning to port...trim tab issue?

While I have no idea whether it is what causes the boat to lean to port at 10kt, a single misaligned rudder seems as though it could cause this problem. If one rudder is true and the other (port side??) rudder is out of line, then as a64pilot suggests this could result in significant drag that would cause the boat to lean (down) on that side. Seems like it is well worth looking but probably best done on the hard.

No what I am saying is if for example the port rudder is off 20 degrees to port, then you will turn the wheel so that the starboard rudder is an equal amount off to starboard, or the boat will turn to port if you don't

Re: Defever leaning to port...trim tab issue?

I guess I do not understand - I only have a single rudder!! But, if a boat has dual rudders surely they are connected such that you can not steer them independently. So, then if one rudder is misaligned I would expect the steering to be less responsive but still allow a straight course. But there would be the drag caused by misalignment. I could be wrong - it happens occasionally!!!

Re: Defever leaning to port...trim tab issue?

I guess all may be revealed when the boat is finally hauled. I hope we get to hear the conclusion.

I see what you're saying... If a misaligned rudder, say the port one 20 degrees "INWARD" causing the port stern to lean inward and down causing a port list, you would expect that if you corrected the helm over a bit, then the port rudder is straight and starboard is off 20 degrees IN...

Why it doesn't lean both to port and starboard going back and forth over the "centered position" is probably just the nuance of the hull/prop tendency ...

Obviously they could be "toed-out" too ... starboard rudder slightly outward... esentially causing starboard stern getting lift from the starboard rudder attempting to point the bow to port ...

If they are there, they are fixed. There is a breaker with some voltage but it does nothing (maybe just standard equip on the breaker panel for an option we don't have). I also have not seen tabs, even when running a hook where they should be.. but we have a diver scheduled to come investigate further. I'll update you all when I learn more.
