Cruising in a 40 footer from Florida to Limon Costa Rica this September

I am going to be moving a boat from Florida to Costa Rica this September, if there are no hurricanes, and am looking for any info on the best routes, things not to do, and where to stop to get fuel. I'm going down in a 40 foot Luhrs, and I plan to do the trip really slowly, around 5-6 knots, to save fuel. Any info on the trip would be hugely helpful!

Right now, i'm thinking of going to Havana, then to Isla Mujeres, than Bay Islands, than somewhere in Nic (maybe Puerta Cabezas) and then to Limon. I speak spanish (I'm a resident of Costa Rica) and I will be picking up a Costa Rican national in Cuba to make the drive with me.

I'm bringing a 48' to Panama starting around the 25th of Aug. Never made the trip before either and would love to have a cruising partner. Although I don't plan to go quite that slow. Maybe we could meet somewhere in the middle on the speed.

How fast are you wanting to go?

Re: Cruising in a 40 footer from Florida to Limon Costa Rica this September

Hi, we were originaly thinking about 18-20 kts. But after thinking about it, like you, we decided it'd probably save a lot of fuel to go slower. Although, I might like to run a little faster on the open water just to cross it quicker. But if there are 2 of us running together then that's probably not that important either..... I think you may know my friend that'll be bringing the boat down with me. He works for C.R. vacations.....Is there a way to give you my e-mail without posting it publicly and we can chat direct.....We are planning to leave Marco/Naples around the 25th of Aug. run down to Key West, probably just for 1 night, then to Havana for 2-3 days.....Of course if we get a running mate we can tweak the plans if we need to. Nothing is set in stone for us.....
