Cruiser Yacht 375 2004

Dear friends,

I'm planning to bid on a Cruiser Yacht 375 year 2004 and 2005. They are both in perfect conditions. The first one with 1,100 engine hs Yanmar T6LPA-STP 315hp. The 2005 with 550hs Volvo TAMD 63P-A 370hp.

Based on my research, Yanmar although less hp, they are a little more reliable and less expensive to maintain given that these are 10ys old boat aprox.

I would like to hear from the forum or Cruiser yacht owners your experience, engine power difference and most importantly, handling in rough waters.

Thanks in advance and good sailing

JV

Don't be afraid of Vovlo's. While, yes, parts are more expensive because they don't get tax breaks and parts have to come overseas, the core of that 63 motor has been around for 40+ years and has more than proven it's ability. Parts are readily available if you know where to look. Still, when it comes to one over the other, you need to worry less about the badge on the motor and more about which one was cared for the best.

We had more than one Cruisers on our list when shopping last year. Other than thinking they are a little on the ugly side ;-) Once we started getting onboard them, the big thing that took it off the list was engine room access. It was far to cramped for me to ever get in to work on very much. It, and the sister-styled Sea Ray boats, (Express Bridge?) suffer the same issue.

Interior layout is nice and fit and finish are good, but no matter how much I liked the rest of the boat, I never could get past the tiny engine compartment.

If memory serves, they have cored hulls, but I am not 100% on that.

The big Diesel Volvos are great engines. (I don't know that specific one though) Big heavy duty engines. A company I worked for (2004-2008) installed quite a few over the years. Built like a tank. I don't know if the parts are any more expensive than the Yanmar really.
If yours are the "2000 series" that may be a different story.

UPDATE: Forget what I said above, the good ones I'm talking about are D4 and D6 models.

YES ! be afraid of Volvos .
As a previous Volvo owner and as someone in the marine business I can tell you that their prices have nothing to do with coming from overseas, so do many of the other diesels you'll see (including Yanmars).

Volvo only sells parts through authorized dealers which gives them very tight control of their market and they take advantage of that. Once they stop building an engine, they stop supporting it that same day. As time goes by and OE parts inventory depletes you are S.O.L.

Too bad ... great engines but the company are pirates.

EG. Air filter for my Perkins $29.00
Air filter for my Volvo $180.00

Before you listen to either of us, call the guys at Vosbury Marine. They know Volvo's far more than anyone on this forum: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Vosbu...34444083273766

Might want to try heading over to the Cruisers Yachts Owners Club site The Cruisers Yachts Owners Club Forum • Index page and posting the question there also.
