71 series engines are easy to work on. Parts Arent expensive nor hard to come by, just to say something nice about them.

Plus it is located in Virginia Beach, VA. GG, if your still around, this one is closer.

1977 Hatteras F/B Motor Yacht - Boats.com

I think it's a credible option, depending on how layout would suit. I mentioned this one in GG's "Passagemaker" thread (http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...n-95999-5.html, see 21 Jan, post #62)... and we actually saw the boat (exterior) where that picture was taken near here, during one of our local lunchtime cruises.

The outside, at least, looked every bit as good as the picture makes it look.

I have allowed as how my finder's fee will simply be a nice bottle of Laphroaig!

If the length were added in the middle, probably doable, but as built could be different than design. I would be very careful buying this boat. I think she should look at something else, too much risk.

Hatteras would probably have described it as a semi-displacement hull, versus planing. Yep, it would maybe eventually plane, given enough horsepower... but this would more likely be run similarly to the way one would run a displacement hull. Perhaps with a bit more speed available for those unexpected squalls -- where maybe a half-hour earlier arrival in port might be slightly more comfortable.

Not sure I could perfectly predict this Hatt's GPH at "cruising" speed but our boat (with a planing hull and similar horsepower) is ~6 GPH at theoretical hull speed circa 8 kts.. And that's only slightly above our engine idle speed. (We idle at ~650 RPMs and ~5 kts.)

This Hatt is almost 2x our length (so longer LWL and higher hull speed) but also boatloads more weight... and the 2-stroke DD's aren't as fuel-efficient as our newer 4-stoke diesels... but even so, I'd not be surprised to hear less than 20 GPH -- maybe less than 15 or even 12 -- at hull speed.

I think I remember reading elsewhere it was Hatteras who did the hull extension on this one, and they're known for having done that to several of their older hulls for various owners.

BTW, the broker's listing that I saw earlier on that 82' Hatteras is here: Walczak Yacht Brokerage Service (Annapolis, MD)

GC is over at trawler asking for title advice. It appears she's not interested in the Hatteras.

Assuming the boat is in as good a condition as the pictures the far cheaper delivery cost (not sure how many tens of thousands would be saved) would allow you to get rid of it and not lose to much. That is a good option to have.

I agree with everyone, absolutely, with no exceptions. You are all gifted and correct. Boy oh boy are you people smart. I mean--each new entry seems to out do the entry previous to it. Mind boggling! I believe the accumulated total hours/days/years gleaning, processing, and earning such valuable information would take us back to the neolithic period.

Showtime!

Sorry guys (and gals),
If I was going to buy a boat in the neighborhood of 80', it would be something more like this.

Re: Completely Overwhelmed

GG, you seem partial to steel hulls, this one tips the scales at 250,000 lbs and a 9' draft. The Hatt is 1/2 the weight and twice the HP.

But...the Hat won't cross oceans.

Re: Completely Overwhelmed

At 1740 gallons, if it can manage 2 nm per gallon at a slow (6~7 kt) single engine cruise, then it can cross oceans.

Well, the good news is that you won't need to buy a radar reflector.

Re: Completely Overwhelmed

Yea but that Hatt won't cost ya 25,000 a year in up keep ! That 40 + year old steel hull is past its prime! and the Glass hatt will be in useable shape 20+ yrs from now and the other will be a rust pile !! And really it's under powerd! of course thats my opinion ! based on 50 + yrs of running large boats of both these types !! and the Hatt will cross oceans with planning and maybe an additional fuel tank of say 500 gals ! sure lots of room to add one !! LOL I guess it depends on what you think looks seaworthy, but looks like don't mean much in rough conditions !! Most any vessel you find in the sizes your talking about, will be comfortable, but will it last without spending big bunchs of time and money should be something you will think about !!

Bash,

Being on the receiving end of those radar reflectors on the bridge of a container ship, they kinda work. Without one a small 'glass sailboat doesn't show up above my sea clutter. With the reflector about 1 in 20 sweeps it manages to reflect my signal.
