Chicago to Gulf Coast

Maybe this has been discussed on earlier threads, and if so, could someone direct toward that discussion.

We are looking for information about this journey re: approximate number of days and, more importantly, the number of miles from point A to point B of this trip.

Our boat is "The Lady K", a 48' steel trawler with twin Perkins 6-354 turbo diesels with a cruise speed of about 7 knots
She was built in Louisiana in 1968 and now lives on the North Channel
of the Great Lakes

Thanks for your help

Re: Chicago to Gulf Coast

I would take a look at some of the Great Loup websites and information. This would obviously be only half of it, but in many ways the difficult half.

Do you know which way you plan on coming, and where you are headed?

Re: Chicago to Gulf Coast

About 1300 miles Chigago to Mobile.

How many days depends on a lot of factors. Get a good weather window, no mechanical problems, no lock delays, long travel days, etc... 2 weeks is possible but more realistically I would plan for a month. If time is not critical, enjoy the trip and make it 2-3 months.

Do a search on Chicago to Mobile as the subject comes up regularly for more detail.

I'm assuming you are planning on the tenn-tom route which 99% of cruisers take.

Re: Chicago to Gulf Coast

I just made part of this trip from Kentucky Lake at Mile 24, Lighthouse Landing and we are currently in Panama City at Bay Point Marina. We went down the Tenn-Tom waterway and it was a very scenic and fun trip. It took us 11 days from Ky Lake to Mobile. We have a Hunter 356 Sailboat and cruised on average at 6 knots. There are 13 locks from KY Lake to Mobile. The most we did in one day was 4 and another day we did 3. We spent a layover day in Columbus, MS getting re-provisioned. It was a great trip and we are having a wonderful time. Our itinerary for just to Mobile was:

1. Lighthouse Landing to Pebble Isle Marina
2. Pebble Isle Marina, TN to Clifton Marina, TN
3. Clifton Marina, TN (thru Pickwick Lock) to Grand Harbor Marina, MS
4. Grand Harbor Marina, MS to Midway Marina, MS
5. Midway Marina. MS to Columbus Marina, MS
6. Layover in Columbus
7. Columbus Marina to Windham Landing Anchorage TT Mile 286.2
8. Windham Landing Anchorage to Demopolis Kingfisher Marina, AL
9. Demopolis Knigfisher to Bashi Creek Anchorage TT Mile 145
10. Bashi Creek Anchorage TT 145 to Upper Sunflower Anchorage at TT 78.6
11. Upper Sunflower Anchorage TT 78.6 to Turner Marina, Mobile, AL

Miles to Mobile from KY Lake = 620 NM; 713.5 SM
KY Lake to Panama City = 774.6 NM; 891.4
