Doubt it. You should be looking at kite sails if you really want to sail a trawler. Of course nothing without a real keel will sail anywhere but downwind, but I'm sure you know that...

Mate, maybe it would help if you looked at several of the posted pix in the ad: the boat was NOT launched (or designed) with a sailing rig. It appears to have been an add-on, perhaps for the trans Atlantic passage. It is most certainly meant to improve fuel economy on some points of sail and in some wind strengths, not to sail on its own.

Sure, it will blow downwind slowly, probably up to around 140 or 150 degrees true, but to describe this as "sailing" is stretching things.

Another way to look at it: They put hundreds of BHP in the boat to motor her along, and it takes a LOT of sail area to equal this... far more than could possibly be flown from the short and ill-placed mast, even with your proposed big screacher.

In short, give it up... ain't gonna happen.

Hi drifter can you elaborate on this? I'm thinking that an economical powercat would be great for my needs so would be interested in why this is so... I have noticed that some of them seemed popular a few years ago but are no longer made (eg PDQ 34).

I think there are two primary forces at work; one is economics. The price of fuel and the general economic downturn simply puts way too much pressure on power boats of any sort. The second is the engineering involved. Some of the boats had substantial power plant/hull problems that were very expensive. I think some of that is they may have been rushed into production to meet a perceived market demand that then dried up.

The PDQ 34 is a particularly notable loss. PDQ worked on it over several years, made incremental improvements. Great boat, well made, quite efficient, but the company couldn't make a profit when the economy went out from underneath them.
