I've made the passage
in our 48' ketch
- we left Cabo San Lucas on April 2 (we were reluctant to leave on April Fool's Day) but the conditions were awful so we turned back. Things were much better on the 3rd and we picked up the trade
winds just 150 miles southwest of Cabo. Had a good down-wind run most of the way and pulled into Radio
Bay on the Big Island after 18 days at sea. The worse conditions we found were sailing from the Big Island to Maui when we found 50 knots of wind
in the Alenuihaha Channel - even though the local weather forecast
was only calling for 25. After we pulled into Lahina and we were complaining about it to some locals, they smiled, nodded and said, "Always double what the weather forecasters say!"
Fair winds and calm seas.
