We depend on the vhf wx reports AND television broadcasts. We have a small tv, mostly for playing dvd movies, with a small portable antenna for picking up over the air tv. Nice to see real weather maps on a screen. The whole tv thing was less than 100 bucks.

Offshore and out of range of vhf, wifi, and tv stations, we depend on navtex. Bit more expensive at maybe 500 bucks, but the wx forecasts are free and, in my experience, pretty reliable.

Lots of quality advice already. I would add endorsement of the app "my radar.com ". For quality displays of weather patterns. Offshore commercial. Weather forecasters are very reasonably priced and very good. I use Commanders Weather .
