Pardon my political incorrectness here, but this is my wet dream!!! I may be behind the 8-ball on this but since I am only recently researching semi displacement and displacement hull cruisers, this really grabbed my attention.

I have spent some time crawling around on this boat, but not underway. They are pretty nice, especially if you aren't attached to the traditional styling of most trawlers. It is fairly well thought out and would be a comfortable coastal cruiser. One of the few powerboats I've seen with an emergency tiller (guess Bene couldn't completely let go of the sailing mindset).

It might surprise you that the beneteau group make a large number of different types of power boats , btw the vast majority of so called trawler yachts have nothing in common with trawlers. Theyre just a powerboat.

I have a lot of good friends that have moved to the dark side. I may go there myself someday. Nothing wrong with your dream boat. Go with what you like.

Do remember that it will suck fuel like crazy should you decide to get it up on a plan and go that fast. Figure 8 to 10 knots as usable speed unless you have an overriding interest in an oil well.

It doesn't surprise me that they make powerboats- I've always know that. Anyway, I too was skeptical of the boat until I saw it in person. It's not something I'd necessarily buy (no sails) but I can see why it will strike a chord with a lot of people out there.

now, now George. It all depends on your perspective. Sure 20 GPH seems like a lot compared to your miserly 2003's. But compared to a gas powered 35' power boat @ 35-40 GPH. The Bene seems quite miserly.

Wow, I love it! I have been analyzing what boat to buy and I think i have just found it (depending on price), does anyone know how much they are going for? Can the diesel engine run continually at slower speeds (to use less fuel) without hurting the engine? Are there any east coast dealers?

A single 5.9l cummins with over 400hp, will not like a lot of slow running. The swift range like all of them are really a sports boat wearing a trawler outside. They have all the advantages and disadvantages as such. Ive been on the 44 and 52 and thats all they all are. But they are very nice and well put together.

To be clear, here are the reasons I would not own one of those, although there are MANY things VERY attractive about them (and the bigger models).

1) Way, way WAY too much power. Remember that every 20 HP in diesel burns a gallon per hour. So 400 HP is 20 gallons per hour. And sorry to burst the bubble, but high speed hulls are horribly inefficient at low speeds: easily twice the fuel burn at cruising speed as a proper displacement hull. High speed engines are also horrible at low speeds. I'm not at all surprised that Power and Motoryacht ( Boat Test: Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 - Power & Motoryacht - Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 ) found the fuel consumption to be "dismal."

2) Engine under cabin: very noisy underway, bad access, results in breakdowns and smells.

3) Way, way, WAY too many parts that are not glassed down. All that stick-built interior starts out rattling at the dock, will get worse and worse over time at sea.

4) Way way WAY too much stuff for the given amount of area and volume. Two staterooms? You really want it open, not claustrophobic as nearly every production boat.

The root problem is that the boat is designed more to be sold than to be used. This is a very common problem with production boats, and the reason so many people have that classic experience of "the two happiest days: the day the buy it, and the day they sell it."

If instead the boat is appropriate for the way it is actually used, then pleasure comes as you use it. That's why it's called "pleasure boating" after all!
