Talking Another Newby Question

Noticed that some power cats run with one inboard motor - just wondering how this works in regards to shafts and propellor placement etc?

Re: Another newby question

As I understand it running with one motor saves fuel and engine wear. Underway the rudders overcome the asymetric thrust at the cost of some drag, but not enough to overcome the fuel economy advantage. Just need to alternate engines periodically, say every day or so to keep the hours and engine wear even.

Re: Another newby question

I know a guy/Cat that runs only one motor at a time when pulling into port. Otherwise he can't keep the boat slow enough w/o shifting in/out of gear frequently.

Cats don't need a lot of power to move. Ever seen a water spider blow along in the wind.

Re: Another Newby Question

Sorry guys I should've been more clear - its seems to me that some are only setup with one engine installed?

Eg http://au.yachtworld.com/core/listin...g_id=75499&url=

I can't see how this would work as the prop surely needs to be aligned with the hulls?

Cheers
Paul

Re: Another Newby Question

They could have an outdrive hanging down in the center.

Or a single engine could power two props - diesel/electric or hydraulics.

Re: Another Newby Question

This one has only one motor on the port side. He says it gets him to hull speed and doesn't need another. Once the cat is in motion it stay straight. It's that first engagement that it tweaks a bit.
