Aluminin hulls in saltwater

I've heard aluminin hulls do not stand up well in salt water seas. Coments!

Re: Aluminin hulls in saltwater

Tens of thousands of alloy runabouts ("tinnies" here in Australia) and thousands of larger aluminium vessels say that this rumour is incorrect.

Alloy hulls resist salt water just fine.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Aluminin hulls in saltwater

And here was me still trying to figure out what aluminin was

Aluminium hulls can get electrolysis and they don't like dissimilar metals.
I have seen vessels that actually have bubbles boiling off of them like a dissolving aspirin in Mackay Harbour.

But then fibreglass boats can get osmosis, steel boats can rust and timber boats can rot.

Proper preparation, installation and maintenance is the key.

You've heard wrong, aluminium is a beautiful construction material when applied to good design and complemented by good workmanship.

Properly maintained it equals anything and excells in other areas. I've built many ally boats the largest a round bilge Joe Adams 45. Love it!

Seen a couple of nice alloy toys. No signs of issues on them.

Build them aright and they will last.

Just make sure the Zincs are proper and your fine. Also I had a client who was chewing through zincs every 2 months. He ALWAYS had his shore power on which let to nonstop electrolysis and making the entire boat one big zinc
