From the sound of it it seems like you want a little room but possible to handle and stay on budget. You might do well with an early 1980's trawler with twin screws. Either a double cabin or sportfish setup depending on if you really like fishing. In the 36 ft range makes a sizable space you could spend a month or so on it. You can save a little money on the single screw. Basically this can get you around with a little bit of weather. If you want full ocean adventure your budget is a might bit short. For places like the Chesapeake and ICW you would be in great shape. There is no way you could live long enough get to every place just in those limits.

I have two retired military neighbors and that is exactly what they do. When you go boat shopping it's about the condition more than the brand. Brand names are what they used to be and not what they are when you come along.

Pblais is right. A well kept Hatteras sportfish or similar brand in the 36 foot range would make an excellent alternative, however, it would not be trailerable easily. If looking for a sportfish, be aware that the old Detroit diesels are thirsty.

Recently purchased a 42 express cruiser with twin cats. Fuel consumption is more than an equivalent trawler , but not that much more. Traveled 1700 miles, or the lower half of the great loop at 10 to 12 k and consumed about 2 k per gal. I can cruize at 20 k, but why.
