Adding an Autopilot

I'm planning to install an autopilot system on our 43' trawler this winter.Does anyone have any experience with the new Garmin GHC10 with "shadow drive".The specs and description sound interesting.

thanks James. I guess I'll have to hit a boat show for info before I decide.I'm familiar with Comnav pilots ,but this Garmin looks so simple as long as it's reliable

You might want to ask other trawler owners what they use. Might be different than most stick boat pilots. I know that Bill Trayfors has had good words to say about the WH autopilot.

I would also suggest you take a look at the WH Autopilots, we have many happy years experience with ours and plan on installing one in our new to us trawler.

My Simrad worked flawlessly over 14,000 miles in 10 months.

From what I have learned, Garmin bought the tooling and design for its GH 10 autpilot from another company that had made it for a number of years. It has been well recommended on a powerboat forum I follow. I am considering it, along with the Furuno 511 and one of the Simrad units.

Garmin's GHP 10 Marine Autopilot system
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=13192
is a new generation of Nautamatic’s TR-1 Gladiator autopilot. Garmin acquired the assets of Nautamatic Marine Systems, developer of the TR-1, in March 2007.

The GHP 10 Autopilot is designed for powerboats with hydraulic steering.

Al Herum, of Marine Electronics Reviews, has published a hands-on review of the unit, including his do-it-yourself installation experience, setup and calibration, and sea trials.

We got 20,000 trouble free hours with amazing precision out of a Com Nav 1001 on our 37' trawler and will be installing one in our new boat this summer.
