As most of you know, I am in Canada and the proud owner of a 58 Bluewater which we use extensivelly in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence area.

We are now looking at getting another boat that we would keep down south to use in the winter months (rather than buying a condo) and store for the summer months. rather than making the two month trip each way down the ICW each year.

Our plan would be to cruise around the southern states, bahamas and caribean.

This particular yacht seems to have all that we are looking for but I am not too familiar with the Jefferson name.

Does anyone own one? Are they a decent boat? Capable of handling what I want to do?

Engines are
MTU Series 60 Marine Diesel
715 HP each
2010 hours.
Anyone aware of any issues with these engines? Are they fuel hogs? Anyone know fuel consumption at low rpm versus high rpm etc...

It seems like the owner has upgraded his navionics to Garmin 4212, ultra anchor etc... things that indicate that the owner cares somewhat about keeping his boat up to date which is a good sign.

I am considering making an offer on this boat but wanted to get the benefit of anyone with specific experience if at all possible before I made the offer and take the trip to visit and have it surveyed.

If we do buy this boat or another one, I will also be looking for safe Winter indoor storage which offers safety from huricanes etc...

I'll tell you a secret, all diesel engines of similar size have very nearly the same specific fuel consumption. Turbocharged engines, high pressure common rail engines, very slightly better. MTU are terrific mills.

Man, power yachts are cheap as chips, eh? Is it the recession? Fuel prices? $400k for 66,000 pounds of boat. Just 10 years old with updated electronics and low hours. A sailboat of similar displacement would start at double that.

Looks like a very nice vessel, if you're into that kind of boat.

It does seem like a good price, I just hope it isn't because it has been through a major disaster in a hurricane and rebuilt etc... Hopefully a surveyor can tell if that has happened.

A very close friend of mine has a Jefferson 40. It's a nice, comfortable boat. It's NOT a bluewater boat, however. If you are interested in a "floating condo", his is for sale for a minor fraction of the 57':
