Yachtsman calls local pub for help

From the Australian Newspaper (We normally get these stories just before we play the UK in some sport)

Yachtsman calls local pub for help

Quote:
British people are known for not making a fuss, so when a yachtsman had to be rescued in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, he rang his local pub rather than calling the coastguard.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Ringing the Bell" at your local.

Seriously though, calling someone who knows you and you trust is not a bad idea if you're not sure how to explain your predicament

He probably knew that the if the coast guard got involved he'd have to abandon his (uninsured) vessel, which is precisely what happened.

It's always good idea to let someone you trust ashore know where you are going and when you are expected back. It's an easy thing to forget. I have been guilty of it a few times.

all he needed was a tow and some pain killers. All a doctor does with a fractured pelvis is to lie you down. So he's lost his boat, hius dream and all his lifes money.

Each case must be assessed individually, particularly with unstable fractures.

Stable pelvic avulsion fractures* usually can be treated with bed rest, using crutches or a walker, and pain medication..
* Where a sudden movement causes the muscle to tear away a piece of hip bone

However, pelvic fractures sustained during a high-energy incident (fall) may have significant complications, including severe bleeding, internal organ damage, and infection.
In these cases, doctors may use an external fixator to stabilize the pelvic area. This device has long screws that are inserted into the bones on each side and connected to a frame outside the body. The external fixator allows surgeons to address the internal injuries to organs, blood vessels and nerves.

Brings to mind the tale of the boater whose cabin cruiser caught fire. First he called his wife to say "Honey, I'll be home a bit late for dinner" and THEN he called the CG for a rescue.

Priorities.
