What's wrong with me

So many of you know I sold my sail boat in April after two solid years of ownership and work and tears and fun. I sold it for many reasons, all of them still valid. Then why over the last three weeks have I spent about 1000 hours looking at sailboat data and Yacht world and craigslist and every classified out there? All the sail boats out there that so desperately need a home call to me. It's a sickness I can't shake. What's worse is all the boats I really like are over 50 ft and they all need work! Dangit.

Re: What's wrong with me

Join the club, I believe men are all wired a certain way, that is why it is called "Boat Porn"

It attracts us at a primal level and excites us to a point whilst retaining our interest through thousands of images and videos when in reality, we should be cleaning the gutters.

The community needs a group such as "Boat Porners Anonymous" or BPA it would enable us with this problem to seek help in an anonymous environment with no risk of judgement, and certainly no encouragement (as you will get in CF from your fellow addicts).

We could easily develop a 12 step program similar to the sensational work groups like AA and NA do.

In reality though the bottom line is - who would and to what end.

Man ( & woman) need boats - thats the only thing wrong with you, you (and I) dont have one atm

So the Preamble would read something like "The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop admiring boats". Nobody would join.

Re: What's wrong with me

I've never been much of a club guy. But in an effort to maybe scratch the itch I'm seriously considering joining one. There is one here and they have a meeting on Monday I'm considering. My fear is that they will be a bunch of Potomac day sailors that wear ascots and talk about stocks while their boat boys polish the hull. Plus the largest boat the club has is a 23 footer. Probably not very many complicated systems I can fiddle with on that one. So I actually thought about taking some real sailing classes with the club but they are all full for the rest of the year. Now I find myself looking forward to winter and at least I'll have an excuse for not being out there... But that is usually when I started the big projects.... Maybe I should get a kit plane and start building that to keep my mind off boats. Kind of like the drinker that picks up gambling to keep his mind off drinking.... Probably just end up doing both.

I saw a boat named "Affliction" in Newburyport yesterday.

Apropos, I think.

Re: What's wrong with me

Boats, airplanes, motorcycles.... No excuse for any of them. Its better to ask forgiveness than permission. Go by a big ol boat....make no excuse, just do it. I'm gonna take the Dink out and set a crab pot then go back to the boat and have a snooze. No place better for a nap!

Re: What's wrong with me

Force your self to go smaller. It'll keep you plenty busy anyway.... and you'll then be able to forget about those big boats on the internet!

My name is John and I'm a boataholic.

I think there is a 12 step program for us out there somewhere.

Well, some are addicted to drugs, some to girls, some to cars ...

Say we are addicted to boats.

Nothing wrong with that.

Have you ever spent 2 weeks in the midwest without seeing a boat? You get very shakey and can't concentrate.

Re: What's wrong with me

Yeah I try and and avoid the west. I like the tree canopy of the east coast. The only time I enjoy being able to see for miles is looking out over a large body of water... With a gentle rocking motion and cool breeze, soothing lapping sound along the hull lines or a steady swoosh under sail. Smell of salt air mixed with something yummy wafting up from the galley below... Knowing I built that or made that or repaired that, tied that knot, painted that line, built that freezer, tuned that rig, stitched that sail....um excuse me.. I need some alone time now.
