Go fast over shallow spots! (Never followed, at least intentionally!)

"CALM DOWN...talk slower...."

Like Hell...You gotta LISTEN faster!!!

But if it's about the boat:

"You gotta put 7 coats of Cetol on the toe rail and 3 coats of clear and keep it touched up to look just perfect"

RIGHT...if you are in some fancy yacht club but if you are bluewater cruising full time you become a CETOL SLAVE especially at the Equator. We stripped the toerail and now we look like real cruisers do and keep the teak toerail nice and clean but not finished.

teak oil is great once per year to keep teak the color it is spozed to be---i wash it with sea water and use a slathering of oil once per year. she is a cruiser not a snotty yot.....
worst bit of info regarding wood for me was---you HAVE to varnish here in tropix...

"you HAVE to varnish here in tropix..."

then you'd be a VARNISH SLAVE

there are so many other better things to do on a boat...even reading cruising forums on winters nights!!!

Re: What's the Worst Piece of Advice You've Ever Received ?

On our previous boat, a Lord Nelson 35 we used to varnish, but gave it up 'cause it peeled.

Next, we used oil, gave it up, cause it got black and moldy.

We finally stripped it to teak, and went cruising.

People said,
"Your teak looks MARVELOUS! What do you use?

We said,
"Salt water and neglect."

They said,

"Oh..."

Re: What's the Worst Piece of Advice You've Ever Received ?

Why don't one of you old timers start a Teak Therapy Forum...unless there is one ...when we first got our boat there was so much talk on the IP list about teak and cetol that I thought everyone was obsessive compulsive about it. I finally found a happy medium for our boat as all owners must. A forum for teak and finishes would be a good place for that info...but...I really don't know the whole forum anyway. I still have to look up stuff about finishes on the net when we are sprucing up stuff.

My recruiters husband when I joined the Air Force told me to put security forces (military police) on my list of jobs that I wanted when I joined the military. Because security forces have the coolest job in the air force he told me. He told me he rode around on four wheelers and broke up bar fights etc.. guranteed to deploy...blah..blah..blah. Then they sent me to North Dakota to do the worst job in the military...in one of the worst places. We have one of of, if not the highest suicide/DUI rates in the Air Force. Oddly enough I persevered...managed to get orders to Korea for a year..which will be ok..then Hawaii...where I will buy my boat, get out of the military, and never look back.

Guaranteed thread drift alert:

Worst movie of all time imho,

"The Big Chill"

A bunch of whining self centered baby boomers.
They're probably all sitting around now in "Occupy" tents.

Yuck.

Now back to the sailing thread.

"JDS Uniphase is a SCREAMING buy at $120 per share!!"

Then it fell to......about a penny. And they say sailboats are bad investments.

XXXXXX boats are no good and you should get a real boat instead

JDSU huh? When was this?

For the record, every piece of equipment i've bought from JDSU for my job has been sent back for service within the first year of use. Mild use, at that.
