Whale 3 miles offshore Fire Island

While we were cruising around Fire Island, fairly large
whale just went under our boat and made us little worried, it was not more than 3 miles offshore, and you can see it on the video: Sailing and cruising around

is it something common in these area?

The ocean is full of whales. Yes, even off of New York.

Dead ones as well. In '05 I nearly ran into one belly up in the same area.

Cool experience, but yes... very common in the area, once you leave NY Harbor or LI Sound.

They get more common as you head from Cape Cod to Maine.
