Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

- Pressurised water system
- Hot water
- Radar
- Windex
- Saloon Table
- Head-sink through-hull drain (one less through-hull to worry about. Now the sink drains into the head and gets pumped out)
- Boat-speed paddle-wheel thingy

Friend of mine had engine problems. He couldn't afford to fix it so he sailed without it for 2 years. Now he's taking it out entirely. Problem solved!

Yeah, and I hope that his friend has as good luck as L&L did getting other folks who do have engines to tow them in when needed!

Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

My boat came with a built-in microwave oven. The oven ran on 110volt ac obviously. No generator on board and almost never plug into shore power (everything runs solar/12volt).
Immediately removed that sucker and donated it to the Good Will.
A microwave on a sailboat just seemed wrong to me. Kind of like taking a generator and a TV on a camping trip.
TV is another thing that I would never have on my boat although I have watched DVD's on my laptop a time or two.

I've seen L&L want-to-be's with a long oar lashed to a whisker stay on a BCC. It looks salty. Of course they had an engine.

I agree. My boat has a nice custom cubby space for a microwave that a previous owner took off. Never saw a need to replace it even though I have a generator (Honda 2000) that could power it. Now it holds a BRITA water container for my drinking water and other things helpful in cooking and storing food stuffs. Much more useful space.

The vast majority of tow jobs I'm seeing around here are boats with engines; they just don't work. The couple engineless boats I've run across just push themselves in at slackwater/flat wind with a dinghy strapped to the quarter.

Remember a guy owned a 50ft Wharram Tehini way back when... no engines... used to scull in and out of estuary's on the tides...
He didn't just 'look' salty...

Yes, I think that is what the Pardeys have done on their newer boat as well.

You know, I don't begrudge them anything, for they are accomplished cruisers and Larry is an excellent shipwright. I just got tired of their engineless preaching contrasted with frequent references to getting towed.

We've done some engineless miles over the years, and lived to tell the tale, but I'd never want to go cruising with no form of auxiliary power... at least in a boat over about 30 feet at the largest.

Cheers,

Jim

Yeah I'm the same and I'm really just shooting the bull on this topic, I know it's often hard to read tone through the Internet.

It's weird because I never saw their englinless status as something they stated anymore than other aspects of their boat (like a bonneted jib). But for whatever reason the engine one just seems to get the most resonation.

People can read your posts and they can read mine; let them decide what they want to.
