Pistachio shells. To leave a trail. Kinda like Hansel & Gretel. In case I can't find my way back.

Not too sure about that one. If there are any wicked witches out there they'll find you easy.

You'll be toast, or gingerbread as the case may be.

Drat! Another grand scheme gone awry.

My wife. Now I have to empty the bucket myself, but it sure is quieter.

I doubt anybody laying on their deathbed says, "I wish I had worked more and enjoyed life less."

But, it's still hard to get the nerve up to do it. Congratulations on getting it up.

Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

I work on commercial ships, most of which are pretty old. One such ship was built in 1943, and had been crewed by packrats for probably 30 years. I hate clutter, so I went on a rampage through the Pilothouse, and tossed 5 giant garbage bags full of junk, including, but certainly not limited to:

- Dozens of equipment manuals for things like Loran, Radio direction finder, and the original gyrocompass, all of which had been removed literally decades earlier.
- A rotary phone (your guess is as good as mine)
- 2 Broken Coffee makers
- An Alpena, MI phone book from 1994
- A 2 Drawer file cabinet (which I'm pretty sure was made of pig iron) that was socked full of old scrap paper and notes used to brainstorm load plans. Nobody had even opened it for several years, and it's only real function was to hold up the coffee pot.
- a broken chair
- 1 bottle of what I assume was urine, which was hidden behind a bookshelf.
- 20 Lbs of wiring that wasn't removed when old equipment was

I felt much better afterward.

When I buy a boat, the first thing I do is toss the hot water heater that is useless under 110 and equally useless with engine water heating it. Inevitably, they end up leaking anyways.

Books. "Tossed" with extreme regret.

We seem constantly to be evicting books from the premises, never really certain how so many seem to make their way aboard. Stowaways, I suppose. I keep thinking it's under control, and then someone will say, "Bash, you seem to have developed a starboard list." And then suddenly I'll discover the journals of H.D. Thoreau in the aft head, or maybe the entire non-fiction corpus of Edward Abbey in the microwave. A year ago I discovered five Jacque Cousteau first editions in the bilge.

No one knows how these books come aboard. Personally, I suspect foul play. Maybe gremlins.

A real paper book is a joy to hold and a joy to read. I simply don't know what my wife and I will do with our library when we cast off i 3 years time. I do mean library - we probably have several thousand books in our library that we have accumulated over the years. We'll. of course, only end up taking the ones that relate to sailing, but even there we'll have to cull between several hundred.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

I am a keen reader and when we embarked on cruising in the Med I shipped over several boxes (around 300 books) from Australia (my equivalent of shoes LOL).

Like you, I felt a real book could never be substituted, but since purchasing a Kindle a couple of years ago I have become a huge fan and it is now the preferred means of reading. Almost all my fiction have now been given away to other cruisers.

I know many books, particularly reference texts are not available in e form, but don't lock yourself in thinking paper gives the most pleasure .
