The Things We Cheapskates Do

I just finished riding from Reno to Denver with my brothers 8 ft inflatable as one of my checked bags. When the Conductor asked what the hell I was carrying I told him it was my personal floatation device. In case anybody's wondering Amtrak will allow you to check one. Sure beats trying to box and ship it. What things have you other cheapskates done to save a few bucks?

I'm living in a boat anchored out, eating a lot of beans rice and fish. Sold house and vehicles and now transport by mothership, dinghy and bicycle, do my bottom jobs on a sandbar. Etc.............................

Buy used or cheap bilge pumps and then get lots of practice with a bucket when the pump fails.

I do a lot of taking broken things apart and putting them back together. I think I had about 16 hours invested in disassembling, cleaning and reassembling a starter multiple times instead of spending $100 to have it rebuilt. I don't even want to calculate how many hours I've invested in the diesel engine itself instead of calling a mechanic, but it's been every Saturday since November.

LOL! I have an appointment to update my prescription next week... I too enjoy repairing stuff instead of replacing, Certainly takes up some time, but the real payoff besides the money saved is the accumulated knowledge, and the confidence to figure stuff out when you have to. I find that a great way to save is diligent shopping around though, made much easier by the internet. I recently purchased 4 new ball valves and 2 thru hulls (all bronze Buck Algonquin) for $130!

anjou, I'm with you about upgrading the reading glasses...but I was thinking/seeing Cheesecake! I will compose a long and varied list about the cheapskate part...with

I have an old but very seaworthy Rhodes Meridian Seafarer and it needed quite a bit of work when I bought it. I do most of the work myself and find that searching through a few of the boat yards that have a lot of salvaged and abandoned boats can offer a lot of items I can use at a fairly good price.
I have been lucky with repairs and work I need at a lot yards and marinas even the more expensive ones. Even with a few days free dockage or moorings as I usually try to find something (work) I can do or help out with in the yard.

I still have nightmares of ordering a large there (yeah, that was stupid). I have never seen someone stuff that much meat into a bun...I don't know how they get it all in there.

I tend to do without before I buy anything cheap. I'll sit around and make excuses for why I don't need something for years before I spend the money to buy it.

In some ways it's "penny wise pound foolish", because it often means defering maintenance and then paying the heavier cost later on. I've gotten better about this stuff on the boat.

We are in the world of cheapskates and big spenders. I vasilate between them. When I am experiencing cash flow problems (cheapskate mode) I dumpster dive and find myself amazed at how stupid people can be to throw away something rather than fix it. When my cash then flows the other way I justify spending the money because I don't have time to fix things. I usually do find time to regret the expense later.

Being a cheapskate, I do love a bargain... and hate bumping up against another cheapskate who dosen't want to give me a fair price for my debris.

Yeah, I had to force myself to show some restraint there too. I was going to reference several videos I have seen.
