Re: Sudden Attraction to Hunters

That's kind of like saying "in the end, if the McGregor 26 wasn't a good sailboat the boats wouldn't sell."
As for sailing your boat DDW, I'm sure that you can, but not without increased risk of holing/chafing your main or accidental jibe (by comparison to traditional rigs with backstays and non-swept spreaders). The B&R rig (in my personal opinion) isn't very good.

Re: Sudden Attraction to Hunters

You can have your opinion, it's OK with me. And I didn't really say I sail my boat DDW. I said I can if I really want too (but I don't ever do as a plan even before I got a Hunter). I chose to sail to a faster point of sail instead.

But if the point is that the B&R rig can not sail wing-on-wing as a regulator thing; I agree. But don't really care.

Just don't understand all you guys. We've had 2 Hunters a 1985 Legend and now a 1992 Passage 42. We sail downwind with the sails winged out whenever its called for. Never had a problem with spreader chafe because you don't have to let the boom out that far. You still get all the sail area you need.

Maybe someone doesn't know what they are doing.

Pardon? WHY are you even using the mainsail at all??

Down wind, most proper sailors know that the main is not that effcient, just use the decent spinnaker or double headsail set up.

I would never sail without a main when I have a spinnaker or gennaker up. Blanketing it when you get overpowered is essential.

Re: Sudden Attraction to Hunters

I thought the B&R rig was used so that the Hunter could carry a high roach main. If so, why do so many have in-mast furling which has no roach.

Don't go for a cat either then.

We've never had that much chafe either- we have the chafe guard on the main and we did put spreader boots and have a pole to keep the main out. We love the area on the back deck without a backstay in the way. we move as fast as we need and have cruised around Ca to Mexico & back.

Re: Sudden Attraction to Hunters

If you want to find fault with a boat you will even if its only the stove. The Hunter's are fine never owned one not sure if I ever will but can guarantee I will not knock one back if its the right boat right price.

My posting indicated that the stove epitomized the problems I find with Hunters as an offshore vessel. If you wish I can itemize the rest.

1) Floorboards are loose
2) Berths unsleepable underway
3) Arch mounted traveller awkward
4) Cockpit enclosure (a popular option) makes deck access awkward
5) In mast furling - I just do not like the system
6) Insufficient handholds below
7) Front opening fridge ( I have seen ones that work; they have large lips on the shelves.)
8) Unsafe galley; no harness and no way to wedge yourself in.

They are OK as coastal cruisers; where sleeping and food prep is done at anchor or at a dock.

That's it!!! Come on I could say this about 95+% of boats on the water!
1 - floorboards, secure them (ever heard of tape!)
2 - berths are just like any boat, install some lee clothes in saloon
3 - love my arch traveller, how is it "awkward"
4 - Take it down for a passage
5 - nothing to do with Hunter, buyer chose this
6 - I can walk below everywhere on mine and never not have a hand hold, if your is different install some handholds
7 - no one really like the newer front only frigs, not a problem on mine as it is both top and front
8 - install a harness

Your list is just so petty! You aren't bringing any useful info into the discussion other that being a contant basher. This was the point at the start that people bash Hunter as a sport (I started it way before I got a Hunter).

Trashing the whole line because they are not fitted out for a passage is BULL! It is up to an owner to fit out for these things. Sure some other boat may come stock with some these but it's because the owner is paying up-front for the manuafacturer to do so (either as an option or it is part of the more expensive price to start with).

If YOU chose to do a passage on a Hunter in the condition that you are using as the basis of your Hunter wide bashing, I question your personal judgement!
