Any time I've ever lost a dinghy I just dive in and get it before it gets too far away. Most simple solution. I even had to dive into and swim through weeds once from a launch boat who was kind enough to give me a ride to the edge of the weeds the dinghy ended up in.

Some dinghi situations are a just a tiny bit worse than others...
