I've observed that pi$$ing contests and falling off soapboxes seem to go hand in hand

Often a messy situation that leaves everyone feeling a bit dirty.

So yours was one of the longer posts on this thread. Which part was the humor - the whole thing, the falling off the box or what? Sure you can judge others, just as others can judge you. It's a pretty close slide between judging others and prejudice. Diatribes about generic others usually come across as prejudice, intended or not, along with a dose of reminding us how moral you are.
Opps, fell off the soapbox ha ha.

Having cruised and lived abroad now for 9yrs, my kids and I have rescued literally dozens of dinghys, skiffs, surf boards, wake boards, paddle boards and the biggest prize was a Catalina 42 that had pulled anchor and was floating out to sea while the owners were away at the bar. In not a single rescue did I ever think of asking for a reward and when it was offered to me, I flatly refused.

As I read through your selfish all about me posts, I'm wincing at what you are saying and your entitlement "Ugly American Attitude" Can you step out of your world for a moment and see how childish you sound? If either of my kids had this attitude I would have to sit them down and have a serious talk to them about basic morality and the responsibility of being at sea. Not the responsibility they have to themselves, but to others!

I sincerely suggest that you use this incident to step back and take stock of yourself and do some serious introspection.
How is what you say not obvious to all? That's the amazing thing.

Having lived in the UK when it was quite socialist, and lived through Thatcher's market reforms, and then in the US, I would say there is a strong association between capitalism and the free market and greed. I saw how much greedier the UK gradually became.

I'm a strong believer in the ideal country being a balance between capitalism and socialism. The UK has various measures like the National Health Service which would be considered socialist, but also a true free market economy, and this balance works very well.

Of course, there are two sides to every coin. It is selfless to be prepared to subsidize the poor, but selfish to want to live off the state and not work. But I know where I'd rather live, in the fairer society.
Right wing - Capitalists are greedy thieves.
Left wing - Politicians are greedy thieves.

I prefer the capitalists, at least they are honest and not quite so self righteous. I can deal with honesty no matter how base..

Lets get real, we all judge and regardless how hard we try we all have prejudices, some are just more honest about it that others. Judging others characters and behaviors helps me navigate through life.

Re: Somtimes it's Better not to Rescue a Boat

I was walking to a meeting one day this week when I saw a cell phone on the floor. Twas a very nice and expensive cell phone. A $600ish cell phone. My first thought was s...t, how am I going to find the owner. Then I realized I was going to be late to my meeting.

The phone was locked so it was no help. I went to my office, typed up a "sign" with my name and contact information then printed off six pages to put up in the area where I found the phone.

My main concern was how was I going to get that phone back to the owner. I hoped they contacted me before the day was out because the phone was getting emails and texts.

A few hours later I got a call from the owner and I was able to return to phone. He was relieved and so was I.

Not once did I think of profiting from finding that phone...

Helping the guy get his phone back made my day and his. Glad I could help him.

Later,
Dan
