From my table of radar performance 10 ft from the waterline gives you a 4 nm range to a buoy


Whereas the 20ft up the mast option gives you over 6nm.

I can see that happening just when the radar was really needed! That is a good enough reason to go with the fixed mount.

False sense of security. This device and the other similar one work on a single frequency band used by merchant ships for coastal navigation. Most merchies use a different frequency band radar when out of sight of land, and this device does not work on that!

Isn't there a "large vessel signal simulator" that can electronically make a small sailboat appear on a merchant's vessel radar like a large "something" that needs to be avoided?

Hi All well first things first. Admiralaty rukes for officer of the watch. If the officer of the watch is found to be asleep on watch he shal be hanged by the yard arm.

Now the good news I saw on the net yesturday that the makers of the AIS system are now offering an AIS transponder for yachts that works just like the ones on merchant ships. It sends a signal just like they do which shows on their AIS receiver and their radar. If you cant find it on the net I will try to find it again for you.
