Should I be ashamed?

Nearly 4k miles under our keel, and I still have yet to open this thing once. Oh well, not proud of it, but I think im taking out our 25 gallon holding tank and filling it with extra diesel lol

I CAN'T be the only one out there am i? We have met crusiers that crap in buckets and throw it over board so surely I'm not the only one who had never turned the valve....

Re: Should I be ashamed?

Your not alone. In 7 years I have never pumped out, but I do occasionally use the holding tank depending on the rules of the anchorage. I have a 36 Gal tank and have thought of putting in a smaller one. Once outside the limits I empty the tank.

Re: Should I be ashamed?

Depends on where you cruise. Dumping over the side is no big deal where there is adequate flow. Off shore or in places which get flushed through adequately is fine. I'd not want to be dumping when anchored in places with limited flow, and certainly not in area that are zero-discharge, like my current cruising grounds in the Great Lakes.

Re: Should I be ashamed?

I think of course it depends on where you are, I pump out weekly, I almost never discharge, just too easy to pump out where I stay.
I'm not saying it's bad to direct discharge where legal to do so, just it's too easy for me to pump out. Way my tank is set up, only way to empty it is thru the pumpout fitting

On edit, pump outs are free for me so that of course also influences my decision

Hmmm. And I thought our red snapper tasted a little ... "off", last night.

We sail in Georgian Bay ... that's a big no-no in our pristine waters.

If your not in US waters it's really a waste of space... Cayman didn't check us once when we were on a ball there for a month

Resale value would go way down.

Re: Should I be ashamed?

Dumping overboard doesn't bother me if you are in open water or if there is a lot of current flushing thru (and no swiming). In a small bay, that's kind of nasty.

Just a practical issue, will you ever return to the states? Florida in particular gets a little draconian in thier enforcement. If they find you with no tank, I would expect a ticket.

As far as converting to diesel, I think the location of the tank would have to be known and how easy is it to plumb into the rest of the system.

We've never used our holding tank, but I wouldn't convert it into a diesel tank. It's too small to make any difference.

Re: Should I be ashamed?

Whenever possible, I pee over the side. Its going to end up there eventually anyway. I'll go to extremes to NOT use the head aboard. Sometimes though, like with guests aboard, it gets used. One pumpout per season, just before haulout.

Re: Should I be ashamed?

Do you ever go for a swim after you anchor? Does anyone else in the cove do the same? Do you suppose some of them use seawater for washing dishes?

Then why does make any difference whether you are in the US or not? If the purpose of the rule is human health, then the law should matter less than the location; hold when you are somewhere people swim, pump over when you are not. It's kind of like speeding in your car; we all push it when the road is open, and we all slow down when there are children around, sign or not.

And if you make one short trip to Florida and get checked, you're going to get hammered.
