Sailing With Cancer

I know I am reviving an old post, but I was curious if anyone knew how John's wife (Melanie) was doing?

I followed John's blog and posts throughout my deployment. It helped me get through some tough times. John was about to sail to Hawaii, but found out his cancer had returned before his departure. We were supposed to meet in Hawaii, but he didn't get a chance to make the voyage. Hopefully Melanie is doing ok; if anyone talks to her, let her know that John lives on in our memory.

I have emailed and mailed but have had no response. Yes, John and Mel live on in our memory. RTB+ sailed with John and Mel and like the rest of use keeps them in our memory.

John was a great guy. I'm sure we all miss his posts here, and I sure miss him as a friend. Like Scallywag, I have heard nothing back from emails sent to Melanie. Hopefully she is back home in the Philippines with her family.

Mel was trying to get it back to the states to sell. I don't think that ever happened. Maybe she got a buyer in Panama. I was looking for "Imagine" on the USCG documentation website, and didn't see it listed there. Maybe it had not been renewed? If it did sell, the name could have been changed.

Hopefully, Imagine isn't rotting away on the mooring at Taboga, Panama. Surely we have some members that have been in that area. A big, red and white catamaran shouldn't be that hard to spot.

Probably the most inspirational thread on this forum.

I've know a few people to get cancer over the years, and all of them got sucked into that thinking that every moment that treatment extended their life would be quality time. But in all of their cases, it never was, and what often started as a few weeks of chemo or radiotherapy ended up with them being an in-patient in dreadful discomfort from the combined side effects of treatments for months and months and months, and then they died.

Life's all about quality, not quantity. Prey God I have this chap's courage if anything similar happens to me.

Well I was just diagnosed with throat cancer, got 4 good years left. Out of 5 kids my youngest is my only son and at age 12 is all about sailing with dad. I'm in process of getting rid of everything and buying a sailboat. Been on trawlers and speed boats all my life. Time to take up sailing and spend a year between the carribean and Belize with my boy. Am I crazy? I'm on disability and only have about 4000 a month total now that I can live on. Thank God I've sold my boat and will use the cash to purchase a used sail boat. This has been a dream and it eats at me every day!! I really need to take this step and do this before I go. Any finds on a 30+ foot boat that's basically turn key would be appreciated and tips or advice. Hope to be able to complete my dream

On the purchase of a boat I can pay cash up to about 40k and I'd like to be able to budget at about 3k per month sailing.

I liked that Pearson in your other thread. But I'm a multi fan which is cats and tris. You will mostly be coastal sailing/island hopping so you can get by with less. Here's a Gemini which has more room than the Pearson but twice the price. The Gem's are cool little cats and are well suited for your goals and they fit in a standard marina slip. Real shallow draft with retractable centerboards. I think they draw less than 2' maybe 19" so you can get right to the beach. They built about 1100 boats of this design and one circumnavigated.
