Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
It all comes around...
Macerator died, ordered new one. Started repairs from June to replace hot water heater and plumbing hoses, did same over the course of a few weeks.
Found frugal replacement muffler, planning the multi-step repair plans.
Macerator pump replacement obtained.
Sailed, sailed, sailed.
Macerator still on list.
Smiles on face.

I tried that but things just get in the way.

Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
Guilt? What is this 'Guilt' you speak of? Is it similiar to the feeling of smug self satisfaction i feel as i sail under a bridge groaning with rush hour traffic? I've never quite gotten used to the idea that pottering about in a boat while everyone else rushes around stabbing each other in the back, is legal. As far as maintaining the boat goes, well, there is never an end to it, but it shouldnt get in the way.

Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
guilt is a second hand emotion related to game-playing. there is n0 such thing as guilt, only gelt, which means money. (no i am not jewish)
therefore you have no business spending time on guilt. go sailing. boat likes that. she wants your gelt also.

Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
Dockhead,
I agree with Zee. Before coming to Mexico it seems that all I did was work on the boat. I would sail once in a while, but I had so much to accomplish. Now that I leave my boat in La Paz, I do small projects while getting out to the islands and other spots. I always enjoyed the boat work, but I enjoy the sailing/cruising a lot more. Get out as often as you can. The projects will always be there.
Cheers, Bill

That's the way...
I have two categories of work on the boat and one method of prioritising the jobs.
The categories are:
1. Jobs that can be done while under way.
2. Jobs that need the boat in the pen/on the slip
The priority system is, ANY job that, if left undone, will prevent the boat from being used, goes straight to the top of the list.
If a job in the second category appears, I DEAL WITH IT, as soon as practical, particularly if it fits the priority system of preventing the boat from being sailed.
Otherwise, when under way, I set the autopilot and get to work on the small jobs, but then, I enjoy working on things, which is why I bought a boat rather than a book.
Just two weeks ago, I went down to the boat to do a few small jobs, but the conditions were too perfect to stay in the pen. So I did a runner, spent two hours on the water, and ended up setting a new speed record (for us) coming home. And, while I was at it, attended to a whole stack of little jobs on deck.
No guilt whatsoever, the whole point of having the boat was for it to be sailed and to have fun doing so.
Matt

Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
Best ratio of fun to hard graft for sailing in home waters (I reckon) is from boats small enough to tow home and keep indoors.
That way the deterioration meter is only ticking when you're actually using the boat.

Very true.
And if towing home is not ideal (i.e. because lowering the mast is a pain) then a really good cover is a great investment. I had a full canvas cover made for our 20 footer. It took minutes to remove and refit, and saved HOURS of maintenance each year.

Re: Sailing Instead of Working On the Boat
The waters you sail in demand certain maintenance criteria... You should feel guilty! If you keep this up we will not have excellent posts from you regarding long open ocean trips in the North Sea. Stop fussing and get to work.
