I carry a whistle on the dink at all times. I don't think my whistle would have done anything. An air horn may have helped.

Enjoy St.Martin/Maarten. PS, if you rent a jeep to go touring, do not leave anything of value inside. They hide in the bushes at the popular spots, taking your stuff seconds after you are out of sight, they even got our beer!

Definitely smart phones do not transmit on VHF. True, if you lose your internet connection it will not have current data.

A class B remains on my wishlist. And meanwhile the app is a big gain. The vendor lists these features below. If it was just vendor talk I'd take it lightly but coupled with hundreds of hours of using the app--many of those hours in the fastest moving harbor on the US east coast, I'm holding steady as a big fan.

I haven't run into the "way out of date data scenario".

If you don't have a class B definitely spend the $10 involved on put this on your phone.

Ardoin,

Thank you for the warning. Fwiw, a similar incident happened early last year and was written up on CF. The difference being that the motor yacht sank a sailboat, with loss of life. I am glad you survived--that must have been quite harrowing.

Again, thanks for warning us all. We are often next to invisible in our dinghies, and need to be alert, and quick to respond.

The proper signal would be five short blasts.

I wouldn't count on the captain hearing the danger signal and changing speed or course, I would spend whatever time I had taking evasive action.

I was reading last night in PassageMaker Magazine about a collision where a ferry boat hit a pleasure boat. Mostly, the ferry boat was in the wrong except that the pleasure boat's captain had it running on auto pilot while he made a trip to the head.

I suspect running a boat on auto pilot and not keeping watch happens more often than we would like to think.

Yes there are guns in dinghys here, In tents, in cars, everywhere. There was a chick got popped for something & when they did a cavity search yep guess what they found the little 22 in her privates inside hidden nicely. It's really kind of funny I noticed that when I go to Walmart I have to make sure my doors are locked and that I didn't leave anything expensive in the bed of my truck or somebody will steal it and there are cameras in Walmart but when you go to the gun show I can leave my motorcycle out there with the helmet on it and my bag of goodies hanging on the handlebars and nobody will touch it. an armed Society is definitely a polite Society
