Re: Removing Rust Stains on Deck

Starbrite Rust Stain remover, works great, I always keep a couple of bottle on board, rust disappear in less than a minute, also great for other stubborn stains on fiberglass

All the above are good advice. And don't take a marina slip close downwind of a steel bridge. Your deck will soon have rust spots all over again.

Almost all the mentioned chemicals will lighten a painted deck or hull. Mine is Awlgrip. If your deck or hull is paint be careful. Gelcoat I don't know. If only the deck is of a color other than white the diluted oxalic acid evenly spread is the best idea. That way any lightening will be uniform.

The best stain remover I have used is Y-10. Looks like FSR, but works as I have had very poor results with FSR. Find it at Y-10 Fiberglass Stain Remover
Good luck.

Barkeepers Friend (powdered type) has oxalic acid among Other things in it. Slow, but effective. Use with just enough water to make a paste. If you add a SMALL amount of muriatic acid to the paste it really speeds rust removal up, but this mixture will corrode ferrous metals.

Krud kutter rust remover and inhibitor. The probblem i have found with spot treatment is that you get a nice white spot where you treated and have a lightly stained deck all around it. Rust stains tend to spead a light stain all over the deck that is not that noticable until you clean a spot. I dilute the Krud Kutter with two parts water to one part Krud Kutter and apply it to the whole deck with a garden sprayer. If the spots are particularly bad I apply it full strength to the spots and hit them with a light brushing. Let it sit. 30 minutes then rinse off with plenty of fresh water. Krud Kutter is phosphoric acid and is not as hard on metal as oxalic acid. It converts the iron oxide to iron phosphate which is soluble in water and rinses away.

Try Whink and a magic eraser sponge. It works for me

Beware of a new product called 'Rusted Solutions'

ON Wednesday I purchased a small tub of Rust Remover Gel, which came with a really pretty brochure for $30. It's rubbish.. Can't get it to remove any rust off any of my stanchions or swim platform..

I'm taking it back to the shop on Monday for a refund.
