Re: RANT: The "danger" of sailing

Ya know, when I first started posting on this forum, lots of people tried to shy me away from sailing because of the dangers. That's right, right here on this very forum. If you have a dream, then live it. Never take any of the negativity to heart. If you've looked at the inherent dangers of whatever you are undertaking, and can live with the risks and minimize the ones that you can, then ta hell with what anybody else thinks

ps. less than 1 month away from a total refit of a Newport 27, and yes, she's as bluewater capable as a finkeel gets, thanks to some custom modifications.

Re: RANT: The "danger" of sailing

Well, I have some fresh anecdotal evidence that sailing IS dangerous:

(Last time I had a cast on my arm, BEFORE I had a boat, it was because I slipped on ice when I was out walking my dog. So clearly, winter and dog-walking are dangerous as well.)

This just in from the Spouse

We have been talking around the table about this a bit and the Spouse just sent this to me:
Quote:
"If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever."
--Thomas Aquinas,Italian priest, philosopher and theologian
I think it may be the best summary of the issue yet...

hee hee, yeah look sailing is very, very, very dangerous, dont even think about it, leave it to us few hardy souls who are foolish enough to brave said dangers for the few tiny meaningless rewards gained thereby...

Living is dangerous and so is sailing, I will continue both and not concern myself with the clatter of sand crabs.

I think that last line should read:

"The internet is great for finding what you want to hear".

Re: RANT: The " Danger " of Sailing

The few clowns that try and tell me sailing is dangerous, I just look at and tell them I'm trying to fulfill my death wish.

That usually shuts them up and they go away.
