One of 'those' Days

Have you had one of those days?

I backed out of the pontoon and the boat swung to the side. I had left a mooring line tied on.

I then went forward and couldn’t understand my son asking if I had seen the red pole marking the rock in L’aber Wratch marina. What was he on about it was miles away. He was referring to the one I could not see behind the mast and we only missed it by a knats hair.

On the same day I was going down the Chenal Du Four when the card in the plotter ran out and I didn’t have the next area. I was left with a screen akin to painting by numbers.

I admit that I am a Prat but have you had one of those days when everything goes wrong?

If you didn't go aground hit something a lot bigger than you, broken something major or gotten hurt yourself; well then it wasn't a bad day and just goes into the lessons learned column.

So true, If it is only your pride that has its gelcoat dented then it is a good day.

Re: One of 'Those' Days

Once I backed out of my slip from Summerfields in Ft Lauderdale into the New River, put her in forward, gave her some throttle and the shaft & prop decided to leave the boat - of course they didnt get far - jaming the rudder hard over to port. Then here comes the Jungle Queen! I managed to drop the anchor before I got washed up on the beach after being run down by the paddle wheeler. Luck was on my side - I was able launch my skiff and tow myself back to the dock. Got into my scuba gear and went down & fixed the problem.
The moral to this story- NEVER LEAVE ON FRIDAY! (it's agood idea to check the set screw on the shaft coupling once in awhile too!)

Re: One of 'Those' Days

I have a ketch. yesterday I was changing the topping lift on the mizzen, knowing I was not doing the job as well as I could, I proceeded anyhow, yep, both lines on the cockpit floor. Went forward to do similar with the flag halyard on the main mast spreader, yep lost that too. Learned about bosuns chairs next. All went well, and safely going up the two masts.

My worst was taking my (first, smaller, thank goodness) boat out of the slip, only to have the motor die.

What was opposite my little $1500 boat as I lost all steerage?

A million dollar catamaran.

Yes, I hit it. I sculled and slowed the boat down, and I wasn't going fast when it died, but it still put a grapefruit sized dent in the big boat.

Re: One of 'Those' Days

How about this, I flew to Alaska ... decided to give my crew a week off ... 4 days later I am asleep in my stateroom when I hear my alarms going off ... hmm the boat is adrift. Get up, of course it's about 3am ... Start the mains nav lights on ... pull up the anchor ... wait a minute where is the anchor ... 350lbs anchor ... gone...why? The anchor shackle pin of course is safety wired to keep it from backing out ... well not when you don't check the wire and it's no longer there. Shee's talking about a bad morning and 4 dives later after plotting the location still couldn't locate that anchor. But, no one was hurt, and no damage to my boat or anyone's so not so bad.

Re: One of 'Those' Days

I think the better question might be "has anyone ever NOT had at least ONE of those days....?"

I think the first time I ran the outboard, stalled it over and over... windage sent us into the boats along the marina and then into the rocks at the end of the dock...

Yeah that was DEFINITELY one of those days...

Someone round these parts suggested that my outboard fuel tank needed to be vented...
