Oil Change Stupidity

As part of the annual pre-winter layup process, an oil change was in order.

I brought all the stuff below while the engine warmed up, then when it was warmed shut it down. I put on gloves and took off my sweatshirt. I placed the funnel upright over the injectors. Took out the dipstick and pumped out the oil. Changed the filter.

That's done. Good. Almost done. I twisted the cap off the fresh oil and started pouring it into the funnel.

Hey...the funnel is not in the right location! I'm pouring oil all over the engine! Quickly I stopped up the funnel with my finger while simultaneously pulling off the rear engine hatch and unscrewed the cap for the valve cover, then stuck the half-full funnel in.

What a mess. Did I mention that I've had this boat for 23 years and have done at least 23 oil changes?

You were merely applying a corrosion preventative to the engine exterior.

No one is perfect. We are all just a moment's lapse away from a boner, even the most ever-vigilant, perfect-sailor, disapproving posters you'll ever hear from on CF. Don't beat yourself up, Tetepare. We salute you for changing your own oil!

Have done that also and it's real PITA to clean up the spilled oil. Engine paint is stil bright and shiny so don't need corrosion protection. Found a long necked funnel that makes adding oil a lot less prone to spillage. Still have to be careful that it's pointed in the right direction but a lot less chance of a screw up.

We are all human and make our mistakes. Some people are just more willing to admit to them.

Re: Oil Change Stupidity

Not too long ago I was changing oil in my truck. I set the first gallon down as it was empty and grabbed the second.
That was when I noticed the little river of oil.
I had forgotten to replace the plug, and threw away 1gl of Shell Rotella T6

Oh to be able to make these small(ish) inexpensive mistakes; mine are usually the expensive ones; I get the cheap thing right

I can remember when that would have only cost you five bucks.
