BC Ferries strikes again.

Was just reading this story (and watching the video).... my heart sunk watching all the poor helpless boats getting squashed...

From what I read in the article, the ferry lost power 4 minutes prior to impact and had deployed anchors to try and stop.

Some Recent Tragic Ferry Accidents:

Ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh, a nation crisscrossed by rivers. In the last 28 years, at least 3,000 people have died in 260 ferry accidents here. In July 2003, a ferry capsized in eastern Chandpur during a storm, killing more than 500 people aboard.

May 17, 2005
Galachipa - Officials at the scene of a ferry accident in southern Bangladesh said on Tuesday they had discovered more bodies overnight bringing the death toll to at least 49.

January 21, 2005 - Bangladesh
At least 118 people are killed and many others reported still missing after a tornado capsizes an an overcrowded ferry in the Buriganga River near Dhaka.
The ferry, MV Maharaj, was designed to carry 160 passengers, but officials estimate 260 were aboard when it capsizes.

May 23, 2004 - Bangladesh
At least 60 die, with another 140 reported missing, when two ferries capsize and sink during a storm on the River Meghna near Chandpur, 170 kilometers (106 miles) southeast of Dhaka. Approx. 100 people were rescued. Turbulent river conditions hamper rescue and recovery efforts.

November 24, 2003 - Congo
As the rainy season gets into full swing, at least 163 people drown when 2 ferries—carrying an estimated 450-500 people—collide on Lake Mai-Ndombe, ("Black Water") located about 400 km (250 miles) northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo capital, Kinshasa. 222 people escape; more than 50 are reported missing.

July 9, 2003 - Bangladesh
At least 400 people are killed when an an overloaded ferry capsizes at Chandpur, 170 km (106 miles) southeast of the capital. The triple-deck M.V. Nasreen, carrying more than 600 passengers, nosedives into the turbulent Meghna river near the town of Chandpur around midnight, while many of its passengers are asleep after leaving Dhaka. The Nasreen sinks at the confluence of three rivers—the Meghna, the Padma and the Dakatia—a spot notorious for converging currents that create a whirlpool effect.

April 21, 2003 - Bangladesh
At least 184 people die and hundreds are reported missing after 2 ferries sink in storms that sweep parts of Bangladesh. The M.V. Mitali—which sinks at Alipur on the Buriganga river, near Dhaka, the capital—is dangerously overloaded, with 400 or more passengers against an approved capacity of 300; the other ferry carries about 100 passengers. Rescuers say strong river currents may wash away many bodies, never to be found.
