My First Two Sails . . . And it Was All Different

Well it happened - I lost my sailing virginity on a 25 footer wooden sailboat a Titan 255 by Cibert. So far I have been out twice on the River Plate. I loved it , love it but a born sailor I am not.

What seems it should be easy is not . The first day I took the helm under motor (outboard) and keeping course impossible for me, under sail no problem, well in a beginner sort of way .
Second outing panic ! Had to take the helm entering the marina as there were problems with the outboard . Well, drunk I drive better than I steer a boat in a sober state it seems ...

Second problem - docking . I had not visualised the whole process and froze too much tying up the docking lines and the boat of course drifted very close indeed to the neighbour. With the skippers help we did finally tie up allright .

All this happened in Spanish and while my vocabulary is fine when not under pressure it vanishes in unfamiliar situations . So at least that is a good thing to know as it probably is the thing most easily remedied.

The skipper was very cool ,complimented me on the things I did right and not all too fazed about what I did wrong . And he will take me out again so there is hope.

But most importantly - I can't wait to go out again . I would have loved to go out today but the winds are higher ,in itself not a problem but this being the austral fall with temps unusually low it would be freezing today.

Did I mention I loved it out there ? I did not want to come in really in spite of being frozen to the bone.

Was that me??? hahhaa, you know what I think, exactly the same what i2f wrote. Whatever you learn, it takes all your life to do it more or less in a way that we can call "right". Patience, attention, and the heart (passion), that's all we need to put when we try to learn something new.
You didn't do anything wrong. It's natural for the first time and you'll do better from now on as you understood some principles at least.
Thanks

Thank you I2F,thank you K. for the encouragement.
And true I already learned a highly valuable skill - how to drink red wine under sail without spilling it...

After working commercially on the water for over 50 years, I still l learn new things, particularly in the area of electronic nav aids. Many of the younger generation are very adept and gifted in the use and management of newer electronic aids and are only to anxious to help an old 'sea dog' join the 21st century. If you aren't collecting knowledge and experience on this journey, you aren't paying attention... Capt Phil

Its like learning to fly. Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Look at it this way. You didn't ding the boat, the neighbors boat or the dock. Heck, you didn't even fall overboard. You already stated that you didn't visualize the process for docking, which is half the battle. You realize what you did wrong and can counter it next time. Ditto for steering. You are more than likely over controlling. You will develop the feel for the right control inputs. Be patient.

I'd say for only two trips, you are doing pretty good. Have at it and keep learning. It isn't something you are perfect at the first time. It takes time to get the feel of a boat and the water. It will come to you.

Most sailboats don't handle well under power, after all they are sailboats...

Don't worry. That sums it up for me too! Especially when trying to get into a new marina.

Re: My first two sails - and it was all different

Thank you all for your kind words .
Well we went out again. It is a bit difficult to find a window as it is cold, but all went well. Learned to reef the main, to tack and how to fish underwater bowlines, well actually he fished, I caught the slimy thing . Even with all that we made it into the slip really well, much to the disappointment of the watchers. Same crowd as last time so nice to not give them a show. Sabre Kai/ Unicorn Dreams, indeed the watchers are everywhere.

If anyone wants to have a look I opened an album, not much in it yet but give me time.

Keep it up Adax, it'll become easier and then you'll have an event that's scares the crap out of you. You'll get through that one too.
