I am 55 and frankly slowing way down. Own two motorcycles and had one or the other out 4 times in two years. Passed up sturgis this year so I could be a camp host at my local lake for three weeks in August.

My wife and i go to the boat pretty often, but drinking a soft drink under an umbrella in the cockpit seems ever bit as fun as putting sails up, putting them down again. Untying the 32 foot boat and then shooting for our slip to tie it up again.

Is 55 the age where you leave er tied and sit and watch the other dock queens sit and watch you?

I could try going on a diet. Maybe Viagra? How about a gym membership? O, wait, have that already and my bank account is thinner every month now.

In this thread, I'll post the weather forecast for the next week. I will not even make it to the boat, I'll just watch the boat from my AC'ed truck while I drink more soft drinks.

Should we form a dock queen club? Lol

Hey we are 59 and heading for Australia from Croatia over the next 5 years or so then it's north to Asia.. 55? your a puppy!!!!! Cheers

I'm 63, my lady is 53 and has just discovered sailing, via me, and loves it, so we sail our 20 footer every chance that we get, which is just about every week of the year. I have had boats up to 42' before now, but i am starting again with this, and who knows if we will go bigger? I am hoping of course.

I still enjoy the sail handling etc, but, you do what you are (both) happy with, and if that is your choice, then so be it.

Best to sod other folks opinions, they can only know their lives, not yours.

55 yrs and its game over?....come on man, you need to start exercising and get going.
The more you exercise the better you'll feel both mentally and physically, and then being a dock queen will no longer satisfy you.

So are you planning on just sitting on your ass until you die?

Age is a number...

At 55 I paddled 1,200 miles around the State of Florida, including a 30 mile portage between the St Mary to Suwannee Rivers. And I was beaten by a retired 62 Y/O FPL lineman! At 57 I can still pull a 24 hr shift. The recovery times may be longer, I can't drive as much alcohol and had to finally give up Macanudos cigars. But there are few things I will not do because I am too old. And I do not believe in working out.

I have known several people who lived (not survived but lived) into their 90's. The common thread was "all things in moderation". Watch what you eat, avoid processed foods and beverages and keep moving because rust only forms on stationary objects!

If you think 55 is old, the hill is just going to get steeper.

I'm only a year short of that and...
* I go rock and ice climbing.
* Sailing a lot. We're leaving for 3 weeks soon.
* My parents frequently join me.
* My daughter took my mom on a 60 mile bike ride last summer.
* I ride ~ 100 miles per week.

I don't do any of this to prove a point. I do this because it's fun, no other reason.

Yeah, I do just stay on the boat sometimes. It's quiet. But then I go out. Untying a 32-foot boat and hoisting sails only takes a few minutes and no real effort.

i didnt even have this b oat at 55... isnt that a speed limit?? why do folks think they have to quit at 55???? life is only beginning--after all that working for a living stuff, now is time to ENJOY......108 is only in the land based places.
here in the land of manana, i am having 85-88F daytimes and a tad high humidity, but i am on water, so how bad can it get?????/ was hotter where i was last year.
workis being done on boat and all is awesome--i am on water. life is grand.

btw--without land to heat up the world, is a much more comfy place.....sail a bit--makes it cooler--breezes and water....but marinas are overly hot--not good air flow.

This is a cruising forum. You can go down to your boat to sip on soda if you want, but I don't think you'll find many here like that. And when you think about it, is it really that much to have in common?

Maybe you should see a doctor, in all seriousness. 55 is too young to slow down that much. I'm 66, live on my boat and sail it every chance I get. Right now I'm with a 55 year old sailing buddy who bought a once-wonderful boat and and am helping him get it in good enough shape to sail it 400 miles home. The pervious owner let water get into the deck big time and we're going to have to build a supporting structure underneath before we can safely move id.

Sure, we're tired at the end of the day, but it's not beyond either of us to either saill or day, or sail for a weekend, or for a week, or do really hard physical work to bring a "last gasp" boat back to life.

If you haven't just lost interest in sailing, I think you should find out why you feel this way physically.

I'm 20 years shy of 55, but I've always said I want to be the 55-65 year old guy who's still running or biking or racing beach cats.......slow down? Nah, moss grows on things that don't move
