First day, first sail, 10 yards out of the slip. 4' depth, 5.5' draft. Guess I should have waited for high tide.

it happens don!,only the other day i watched a guy in a rib paddle over to a mooring on the other side of the channel for a quick ciggarett.

problem was the tide was falling! he was still there 3hrs later looking silly shouting to his mates on the dock who wanted to go home!

That's priceless. The folks I bought Honeysuckle from had the opposite experience. They had taken her from Sidney BC up to Alaska and back, the summer before I bought her, at least a 1000 miles. They arrive back at Tsehum Harbour where they started and went aground in site of their berth. They had to sit and wait for the tide to come up to complete the last bit of their journey.

Sping tide in French Brittany. That evening, at high tide, the mooring buoys I usually tie too are all occupied. I spot a free one less some 75 yards towards the shore. Ain't I lucky ?
At midnight, nature's call. The shore lights are well tilted already. A quick look at the tide table: 3 more hours and more than 10' to go.
How do you sleep on 7' fin keel boat when the mast is hugging the ground ?
I'd never realized how steep the bottom slope was at that place !

Amen Greggener! It took me years to finally figure out that when I bumped the hard in my Morgan 34, all I had to do was jump overboard and I was just waist deep. I would put folks on the bow and just lift up the stern and push her off.

Been there, done that, thankfully never had any damage to the boats.

+1! I have also 'been there, done that'. Fortunately the Chessy is mostly a mud bottom. Great for minimizing damage.....but stuck usually means STUCK!
