I really feel I need to comment here. We extensively cruised our Mariner 40 Sea Trek for over 17 years and with our six foot draft we have NEVER run aground, something we are very proud of. We have whoever, parked the boat in some very unusual places

I just ran aground last weekend in an area I thought I knew very well, just off of a well marked channel, ...well one side is marked. I backed off the channel to one side to turn around, just like I did a hundred times before and suddenly scraped bottom in what was once 6ft of water. Woops, a quick check of the chart showed an old spoil grounds, then I realised, ... they just redredged the channel last month.

hurmph... did it once in a slough I had no bidness being in. It was a stone cold bitch haulin her off the mud and turning her around...The log fish ate my prop and I wound up pullin her out for about 2 miles...

Man did THAT fix me from ever again not paying CLOSE attention to depth and obstacles...

As a young kid growing up on a farm we always learnt that you weren't a proper horseman until you have fell off enough to know how to hang on tight! I think the same principle applies here, your not a sailor until you have "run out of water" enough times to learn not too!

Before they quit dredging the San Rafael channel in SF regularly, the City and the Corp of Engineers used to disagree regularly on where the Bay, Corp respnsibility, ended and City channel began. With a 6 foot draft you needed to take a run at getting over the 'hump' which neither govt institution felt was their job to keep clear. Pulled many a sailor off that obstacle which was impossble to avoid as it cut across the entire channel. This was in the early 80's as I recall. Meh, I've been aground for a month before. A storm put me there and it took another one to float me off.

I wasn't even standing on shore when I took this picture. I'm 3/4 of the way down the length of the dock, standing in the shallows between two docks. I was wearing chest waders and carrying a tile scraper which was put to good use scraping the hull clean.

It's called "careening" if you do this intentionally. "Opportunistic" if you do it like I did.

We have three rules on our boat. 1. Only go aground at low tide. 2. Never anchor where birds are standing in the water. 3. Never sit on the conch shell. First two apply. Third was by unfortunate experience....

On topic of going around have a look at this photo of some poor fellow who went aground on the top of a 12 metre spring tide in the River Avon coming down from Bristol. I believe it was quite difficult to get off to say the least. You could hear his wife from the other side of the river.
