Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

Just say your from the hailing port that is on the stern, if it's an official, that doesn't confuse them

Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

My outrageous wife often answers that question by saying, "I can't tell you I'm in the witness protection program."

Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

My wife is a Newfie. Newfoundlanders call people, not from Newfoundland "CFA's or Come From Aways". If you're not from Newfoundland or Labrador, they don't really give a ****, you fall into the other category.

If you are from Newfoundland, you can be a Towny (St Johns or Mount Pearl) or from the bay (any bay seems to be better than a towny).

So if you visit Newfoundland, you have a few options, you can tell them which part of the Rock you're from, you can admit to being a Towny, or you're a CFA.

If there is a chance that the questioner is looking for money I always tell them "I'm not a Yank!".

Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

Yes, it is an innocent question, yet usually troubling.

I find it impolite, questioning, unless it relates to a sort of "which kind of sea/wind did you find over the last 48hrs?"

Asking which next harbour are you heading to...? Is equally impolite, to me.

My answers vary, depending on whether I am in my own country/not, and who is asking.. (police, layman, sailor, woman!)

Each of them deserves a different answer (4x2=8!), yet at times I get confused too :-)

I tell them Mars . . . and I'm desperately trying to return.

Perhaps I'll say "I'm a Vulcan" seeing I've bought their new anchor.

Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

Say 'over there...' while pointing vaguely towards the sea.

I come across a very similar struggle of answers being an American living in England.

When asked where I'm from, I have to try and gauge if they mean 'where in England am I living?', or if they are trying to locate the origins of my accent, and then the answer might be 'Iowa, in The States'. If I answer with where I live in England, they give me a confused look, cause obviously I'm just visiting, I don't actually live here.*rolls eyes*

I think I'll resort to pointing vaguely towards the sea and saying 'over there'.

Re: How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

unless to authorities I use to say "I'm a sailing vagabond, I'm here today and there tomorrow".
Which caused some very funny reactions and situations. A group of Portuguese fishermen were really shocked "no, don't say that, you can get into a lot of trouble with this!" I explained to them. A few days later they came back to me, they've been thinking about it and told me "you are right, we are also vagabonds of the sea and since you came along to talk about it with us we are really proud of it! We've been to Chile, Alaska, South Georgia, Brasil, Greenland and and and ... and actually we don't have something land people would call a home."
Sometimes I say "planet earth" and people get a big grin on their face. But this answer usually leads to the question "where are you from originally?" and I usually answer with the country I was born in (Germany).

Trouble is, when you answer straight away where you were born and raised, people tend to want to say something nice about it or ask questions. For me this is very difficult as I left many many years ago and don't follow the news. I haven't got a clue what is going on there, I don't know about any footballplayers and not about the price of a pint of beer which leads to some silly situations. For me Vagabond is the best!
